Hi,
I am Jennifer, I have used Ranger station for about five years because I used it to look up information on a 1999 Ranger that I had. I have now purchased an 85 Ranger and I am looking for information. This truck is in great running condition but it does have a ticking noise that makes it sound like it is low on oil but it is not. Any ideas to what this may be... I am hoping for a quick fix like injector cleaner or something along those lines... A friend of mine suggested that it may be the lifters and not worth fixing. What are your thoughts?please wait 1 second(s) for an uncompressed image, or press Ctrl+F5 for original quality page

Thanks,

Jen

is it a 2.9L? if it is, like your friend said, its not worth fixing. as long as you have good oil pressure your ok. the problem is that the gauge on the dash is just a switch and doesnt actually tell you the correct reading. if you want you can hook up another oil pressure gauge. mine always does it once its starting to warm up. heres a short write up on how to hook one up: http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/Spring2003/oilsender.htm

it talks about the valvetrain noise here too about 1/4 down the page:http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/2_9_Page.html

any other questions just ask away! lots of knowledgeable people on here
Merry Christmas!

Hi Jennifer,

Welcome to TRS...that was a good read ^^ even though I have the 2.3 it's always interesting to learn new stuff...plenty of information on your ticking though...I had a 2.9 in my second Ranger but dumped it for the 2.3 that I had rebuilt...I had this oil problem in mind when I did that, but if I had read through this thread I probably would have rebuilt the 2.9 and kept the auto tranny...

Oh well, live and learn...:)
