First question why does my 84 2.8 have overdrive? That's confuses me. Also what manual transmission can I swap in. Thanks mate's.

The most direct bolt ins will be either the Mazda m5odr1 and the mitsubishi fm145. The Mazda is the preferred transmission to use

A t5 from a fox body mustang with a 4 cylinder will work but it's not a direct bolt in. The shifter will sit far back. And the clutch is cable operated. Vs the ranger hydraulic system.

So let's say I have a 92 4 cylinder with the m5odr1 I would be able to swap it all over?

Quick answer, no

If your current transmission is a 4-speed then no Overdrive, if it is a 5-speed then it has Overdrive, Reverse is not a "speed"

Toyo Koygo, Mitsubishi FM145, or M5OD-R1 are transmission "Models"

Models denote what is inside the transmission, not what it will bolt to, fit.
That has to do with the bell housing and tail shaft of that Model of transmission.

Mitsubishi FM series had detachable bell housing so you could swap bell housing to fit engine bolt pattern

M5OD-R1 has an integrated bell housing so can not be changed, it is part of the case.

An M5OD-R1 from a 2.3l engine will not bolt to a 2.8l engine

4cyl 2.3l, 2.5l 2001 and older have same transmission bolt pattern.
2.3l 2001 and newer do not

3.0l engines have unique bolt pattern so do not match any other engines

2.8l, 2.9l and 4.0l engines all have the same transmission bolt pattern, so transmissions can be swapped.

2WD or 4x4 also must be the same, they have different tail shafts

Your 1984 2.8l will have detachable bell housing on transmission so you can use that same transmission model from from pretty much any other Ranger, just swap bell housings, matching 2WD or 4x4 of course

To use an M5OD-R1 you need one from a 2.9l or 4.0l engine, and 2WD or 4x4 matching yours.

Also 1997 or earlier, they still had speedometer cable hook up which you need on the 1984

M5OD-R2 are bigger, used in full size Ford F-series trucks, like F-150 and F250, and will not fit your 2.8l

Thank you Ron, I guess I'll go find a year with a blown 2.9 and good manual tranny :)
