Hi guys, I am new here and have few question about my next possible purchase.
I found a 1984 Ranger 2wd with the Perkins diesel and 4 speed and already SVO converted. It is black with red interior it had some rust in the common places most notably the bottom of the doors are half missing driver side has a hole in the floor pan and rocker. Also has a roll bar with lights in the bed and push bars on the front. The odometer reads 84k but it is believed to be rolled over once. The only reason I did not buy it on the spot is it has lost reverse and they are asking $1000 but money talks.

So what I want to know is how easy/hard is it to find a new 4 speed or 5 speed and what is required to put them in. There are 20 1/2 gen rangers at my local pull a part.

Thanks

I think they use the same trans/bellhousing as the Gas 2.3L/2.0L....but im not postivie.

Dustin

I don't think so at all. Not that I'm an expert either. I just remember reading about manual trans swaps on these, or 4-5 speed swaps, and I distinctly recall the number of options being limited. I don't know what they use but I'm really doubtful they use the same pattern as the gas 2.0/2.3L.

Well I posted here to get an answer cause I want to know for sure that I can get a tranny before I buy and looked though the tech pages on manuals and it hardly mentions the diesel.

The diesel uses a different transmission which is virtually impossible to find or get parts for.
Shoot AllanD a PM unless he checks in.

I don't know if they have transmission kits, but the Napa by me lists a ton of parts for the Ranger diesel engine. I'm almost sure it was still a Mazda transmission, but since it's the Perkins, I can't be 100% of that either.

Lotta mysteries surround those rare birds...

OTOH, since parts are still somewhat hard to come by you could always switch it out for something like the T5, or even the M50D-R1. kinda the more expensive route as you'd need an adapter plate built, but it'll be a million times easier to fix if you plan on this being for the long term.

Ford still has the Fuel sending unit avaiable for Diesels(Go figure!), Pisses me off too.(drives a gas with broken sender gauge):bawling:
