1983 ford ranger cowel vents?

Hi, on my 83 ranger I cleaned the cowel out and was deciding to leave the little rubber flaps off the ends of the cowel, I wanted to know if this was a good idea, or bad idea. just needing some insight thanks for everone's time.
 
That is a rust prone area. I wouldn't think taking that out would hurt and may allow stuff to flow on through.
 
that what I was thinking too that it would let all the big stuff run out insted of sitting there just didnt know what the reason ford put them there
 
I'm pretty sure I didn't replace mine when we were going over my B2...the little rubber pieces were about falling apart anyway.
 
thanks for the replies I'll just take them out just didnt want to start another place to rust
