My truck has the 2.9 and when I put it back together a while back I put a 180 thermostat in it and I was wandering if that was my reason for the missing feel at idle? I pulled into a store the other day when it was 101 here and when I started the truck up it was idling sooooo good. Just wandering if when I drain the radiator to put my condensor back in, if I should put a 192 thermostat back in it? :)

I don't know the answer. I also replaced my thermostat in my 2.9 with a 180 and have a lot of idle problems until the engine warms up. Then it runs very smoothe. I have replaced all of the sensors, the EGR valve, checked fuel pressure, replaced the IAC & the fuel filter. My code reader gives me an 11 which means all of the sensors are functioning ok anf I have no major faults when running. I live in San Antonio and it is 101 here this afternoon. Hope we can find an answer as this seems to be a common fault on the forum.

Can you slip a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator and bring the temp up as a short test?

I put a 180* t-stat in my choptop a long time ago along with an explorer radiator. I did have some idle issues around the beginning but after cleaning/replacing the IAC (idle air control) valve and the TPS (throttle position sensor), the problems went away and the truck started idling around 800 rpms (a little high but not to be unexpected with using the wrong computer - I have a computer out of a 2.9L BII with an auto trans in the truck, but the truck has a manual trans - auto trans computers have a higher idle.)
