15w40 in the axles

me and my friend both have strictly trail truck he has a jeep i have a ranger, and neither one of them will ever see the road, we also have an abundance of 15w40 diesel oil and we where wondering if we could put it in our axles scene we also chance the fluid in them several times a year. we though y not save some money just wondering it could cause serious damage.

Yea it definitely could, and probably will cause serious damage. Motor oil does not have the extreme pressure (EP) additives that are needed to protect the gears. There is a tremendous amount of pressure between the ring and pinion gears and it will just whip the crap out of motor oil.

If you have an abundance of it, use it in your engines. Sell it to friends/family to use in their engines. Use money to buy gear oil.

in my explorer axles it calles for 75w-140. and everything else i have heard 80w-90 so i think you should get something abit higher

just use 90W hypoid gear oil. like exbass said... it has extreme pressure additives that engine oil does not.

Agreed. Differential oil needs to be GL5 rated for the gearsets to last.

Gear oil is hardly more expensive than engine oil (currently about $12 a gallon for Walmart's Super Tech brand). Use it.
