My 97 2.3l Ranger is throwing code 1443.

It says purge control valve.

Is this the first part after the charcoal canister?

Also the hose going to it seems cracked.

This seems like a specific hose with two size openings?

Can I use fuel hose and a hose clamp? Or do I need to go to Ford?

Great to have the site back!

Thanks Dan

I believe it's P1443, and yes it's the purge valve sensor or those cracked hoses going into or from it.

I would first try replacing all those damaged hoses and resetting the CEL and see if the light comes back on. If it does then you've fixed the problem, if not then I would recommend replacing the purge valve.

This same code appeared on my 95 Ranger a few years ago and ever since I replaced my purge valve I've had no problems with it.

P1443

You correct. That should be P1443.

Now as to my second question. Do I need a special hose from Ford?

If it's just a vacuum/fuel vapor hose, then no, any good quality vacuum hose, that fits correctly will work fine.

P1443 code

I ended up buying the whole assembly from Ford.

It included all the hoses, purge valve and solenoid going from the canister
to the intake manifold.

The bill was $129.

Hope this fixes the problem.

Daaaaaaayum! I thought you had this fixed a while ago buddy. Sorry to hear about that.

But yes, that should take care of the code. Make sure to reset the computer and let us know if the CEL stays off. Later.

Allen

Glad to hear you got it fixed. Yeah, you're right about being pricey. I forked over like $80.00 or something like that if I remember right just for the stupid purge valve.....ouch!

Allen

This fixed it.

A real easy assembly. Bit spendy though.
Dan

Yep, little spendy...but when you drive a ferrari of trucks..you have to expect that....har,har...

I changed the very same assembly about a year and a half ago.

Side note: made a 1200 mile trip to Tx and back and averaged ~25 mpg over the 1200 miles, I was pretty impressed.

i had the same code and replaced the solenoid and the valve which fixed the problem and kept the CEL off.. in retrospect i would have done the valve first before the solenoid (cheaper of the 2).
replaced the vac line with standard line.

Purge valve and solenoid

Actually, I was reading in another forum that one should try spraying
the purge valve and solenoid with carburetor cleaner and compressed air before
replacing them.

When I tired this, it seemed like the purge valve and the solenoid was connected by a hard hose that would not come apart.

I ended breaking the solenoid trying to get it apart. Hence the complete
replacement.

Did I do something wrong?

hmmm... that isn't like how mine was set up. there was a hose in between the purge valve and the solenoid but it was a rubber line.
i could see busting off the plastic nipple the line goes onto.. but in that case it would ruin the part anyhow. i have read some folks have been able to get the valve working again by spraying carb cleaner through it. i think the solenoid either works or it doesn't...

I think some sensors are actually parts that are disguised as mechanisms that can go off so you have to go to the stealership to fix....hahahah.

Me too!

Hey guys, I'm a noob here. I have the same po1443 code that comes back repeatedly on my '95 5 speed, and the code scanner just says "Emmisions related" but no specific info. Now I have the info and a possible cheap cure! Thanks, Rick:icon_cheers:

Mine was a rubber hose too, but as much as I tugged on it it wouldn't come
apart. Perhaps I should have tried cutting it off. I ended up breaking the
spendiest part!
