I have a question about a tapping or clanking noise that happens when you turn the rear output shaft back and forth? Is this normal? It sounds like something hitting the case just a few inches inside the case behind the flange.

Thanks,
Dan

It's the oil pump hitting the case and its normal. (It's a poor design.)

The pump rides on the output shaft and has an arm the locks into a groove on the housing to stop it from spinning. There is a ton of clearance for the arm to bounce around in the groove. Over the years it wears the case and creates more wiggle room. They have been know to break the arm or wear out the case and spin the pump, breaking the pickup hose and taking out the case. But it's not that common.

Ok thanks! I just picked this thing up and was only supposed to have had 89,000 miles on it and was concerned about the noise and didn't know if I was going to have to tear apart and rebuild or not before installing it in the truck?

Dan
