Fellow Rangers,

I’m looking to upgrade my stock alternator to a 130 amp alternator. I recall PJ412 suggesting a 94/95 Windstar and a bracket from a Chevy 350. My questions are:

1) Does TRS have a list of donor vehicles that offer the appropriate 130A alternator? If not, suggestions please.

2) Does TRS have a sample electrical diagram or previous threads for wiring the ‘new’ alternator to the 89? PJ412 also suggested taking the wiring harness from the donor vehicle.

3) Any bracket swap or modification suggestions?

My 89 has cruise control and AC which I plan to keep. I put a larger radiator and shroud from a 94 Explorer in (bolted right up) and am considering an electric fan.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

PJ is probably going to have the best answers for you.

Have you looked at the tech articles? There is some info and articles on alternate and better alternators. Unfortunately, none of them work for me but there does seem to be options for the older models.

Thanks for the reply sgtsandman,

The tech articles show that Rangers in the early 2000s came with a 130 amp alternator and that NAPA sells a 130 amp the fits ‘most’ early Rangers and BIIs. I’d still like to pick something out of the bone yard with minimal bracket alteration and use of the same type belt. It would be great if one from the early 2000s would work.

I’m fairly new and don’t know how to reach out to PJ412 directly. If you could forward this to him I’d appreciate it.

One way is to find a post he has made, hold your cursor over his name and a profile pop up comes up. From there you can click on the "Start Conversation" button to sen him a private message. The other way to get someone's attention is to put an @ and start typing their name to Tag them in a post. It will send them a notification. Like @PetroleumJunkie412

Google "Ford 3g alternator"

The 3g is the one you want.

You'll need a 3g with 12-6 o'clock mount tabs. Basically anything with the 3.8 in it will have this.

Grab the alternator, entire harness coming out of the back of it, and mount bolts.

You're going to recycle your block side bracket, and replace the upper with chebby.

Also get a mega fuse from a Toyota or off Amazon. You'll want a 175 Amp between your alternator and everything else. Carry a spare. Better to pop a $6 fuse than take out a battery and pcm if it goes into runaway charging.

The breakers do not work under the hood. Too hot, and it trips them. Tried it.

As always, thanks PJ412.

Any particular Chevy you suggest to look at for the upper bracket?
