I have one queston on upgrading my B2 rear brakes to 10 inch from 9.With the 10 inch drums being 1 inch wider than the 9 inch drums will that off set my wheels out by one inch past the fenders from where they are now?

:dunno:....um what? Are you swapping out the whole axle or...? I dont think the 8.8 backing plate will fit on a 7.5 in the first place if you arent. 2nd thing, No, it wouldnt "offset" the wheels. Offset means how far the wheel sticks out, not how wide it is....

No, it will not make your wheels stick out any further. And the 10" brakes are taller as well as wider, can't remember how much wider, but I don't think its an inch. And yes, the 28 spline 8.8 and 7.5 backing plates are swappable. The wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface stays the same width.

I can see where the OP is confused. If the 'width' of the new drum is one inch wider he may think its added to the total width of the axle. I don't know the interchangeability of these parts but I would suspect that the width would not change, even if it's possible to go to ten inch in the first place. Is the ten inch drum also wider as well as bigger in diameter?

edit; pillen140 answered, thanks.

Its got a wider friction area, but it doesn't change the wheel mounting suface width. The backing plates are offset a little more than the 9" brakes and the drum its self doesn't taper as much, even though you barely notice it. And the backing plates ARE able to be swapped. When I put my 8.8 in, I swapped my 10" brakes from my 7.5 axle to the 8.8 axle.

So being the 9 inch drum is 1.75 inch in width and the 10 inch is 2.50 to 2.75 inch, then the 10 inch backing plate used will not change the tire tracking width?

I have 10 inch brakes already, but have read that the Aerostar finned drums are a direct fit exchange from AlanD's posts in the Brakes section. I'd like to do this and wonder, has anyone did this swap? I have a R5 diff in a 1997 4.0 SC Ranger.

I'm a newbie here,but I'm a defector from the F150 forums! :D More RBV knowledge here!

When i upgraded to 10 inch in my truck i did that finned drums form a Aerostarm, never had any problems so far. and have never faded from what have noticed.
you can never have to much brake cooling in my mind. Go for it

Aerostar drums

Thanks! Always good to hear from someone who has actually did the swap! I've got a bid in on some brand new ones sp I'll see how it goes.
Thanks again!

Just browsed this topic and wanted to mention that everything from a 7.5 will interchange with an 8.8, except center section, of course.
(axles, brakes, etc.)
And Exceptions include large bearing housings like later Explorer 8.8s...

*cough*use Mustang discs*cough*
:)

I got the Aerostar drums yesterday and put them on my 1997 SC with the R5 with 10 inch brakes this morning. I just got back from a trip around town and NO issues at all. Simple bolt-on upgrade. The only thing I had to do was retract the adjusters due to the larger inside diameter of my worn-out drums, which would have been required regardless of drum type. I'd like to thank everyone for the very helpful answers to my questions.
