sounds like the gearbox vent line for your front differential.

what kind of surface were you driving on that you needed 4WD but was smooth enough to to feel like the truck needed an alignment?

well that would be why. You're probably right in the fact that it should be used from time to time to keep things working, but do it on grass next time. The transfer case does not allow for different speeds between the front and rear driveshaft, so the drivetrain will bind if you aren't on a surface that allows some slipping. It will manifest itself by making noise and driving like it needs an alignment.

As for your vent line, if that's what it is - it should be suspended upward as high as it will go to prevent getting water in your differential.

that's the only hose (other than your brake line!) that I can think of that should be in that area. Like I said though, it should be suspended up above the diff rather than hanging down. With the internals of the differential spinning it can splash oil up into the hose, and if it's hanging down that oil will drain out of the hose rather than drain back into the differential case.

And if it's blllllaaaaaaccckkk, it definitely is due for a changin' too.
