I suddenly lost power while on the highway today in my 87 ranger. I pulled over to see if I had any smoke, but nothing. So I started pulling spark plug wires to see which one it was. Sure enough cylinder 1 was a misfire. When I took out the spark plug I found that the electode and all insullation had been melted off. After replacing the spark plug, I was able to regain power, although I now I have a bad sputter at idle. So my question is what could have done this? I will note that I have gone through 2 spark plug wires on that same cylinder because the guts end up comming out when I pull the wire off my spark plug- which could be due to heat.

Sounds like a lean condition.. better check the injectors If you have injections.. Or detenation might check the timming as well.

What do I need to check on the injectors?

Maybe someone well chime in ... I sorry but I don't know that much about injectors... there is some kind of Light thingie that checks for the injectors fireing... I used to have a link for reading spark plugs but I can't find it now.. I'll keep looking and if I find it I'll post it for ya...
