09 Ranger Noise when cold

I bought a 09 4 cyl. Ranger replacing a 99 v6. I've noticed during recent cold days a tapping sound which I assume is either injectors or lifter. It goes away after a mile or two. Since it's about time to change the oil (5k miles), I checked the oil tonight and it seemed dirty(dark) to me for a new engine with 5k. Is that normal for this engine/breakin? Thoughts on the noise and oil?

I am not sure aout the noise ut it is always a good idea to change the oil at 1K

I would assume it has something to do with the oil/filter. They probably put in break in oil which would get darker faster i would think. It also depends on your driving habits. Do you start the truck and go? Does your truck reach normal operating temperature by the time you get where you need to most of the time? An engine that rarely sees NOT is going to wear alot faster then an engine that gets driven a good 15 - 20 minutes each time its started up.

When it gets really cold I start mine up in the morning and let it run for about 5 minutes. Theres always a noise tapping/ticking when first starting it in the cold. It goes away after it warms up. I wouldnt worry to much. Mention it to your service provider next time you take it in.
