08 or 09 pics

Here's my 2008:

Body lift and slight torsion bar crank:

This is after installing torsion keys off of an '07 or older truck... clocked slightly from the keys that came on the '08 and newer.

I just did a torsion bar crank on a brand new 09 ranger fx4 at work the other day trying to fit a set of 265/75r16's on it. At full crank (maybe gained and inch of height) the 265's still rubbed the fender liners....I was quite disappointed.

Weird...Cooke15 ran the stock keys and 33x12.50's for quite some time on his '08 Sport...

Throw on some '07 and older keys on it...called the PreKey mod.

Did Ford put in lower keys in the new trucks to eek out an extra MPG or something? It seems odd to me they would make the Ranger lower.

Yes. They also made the valence taller with a lower spoiler of sorts. '08 4x4's are about 1.5" shorter than the same truck but '07. They may have changed the engine tune as well to lean more towards mileage.

yeah mine is a turd, dont know its its because of the gearing or the engine tune. will still put on a good smoke show but i cant pick on as many imports as i could with my 93 2wd. i sure do regret getting the sport! i plan on prekeying but i tryed to put her in the garage but she dosent fit, cant do it at work because that would be misuse or government tools. so for right now im just gona crank up.

Thanks guys... mine was great stock but now that I have the bigger tires I can't wait to re-gear 'cause the performance has definately been affected.

I was just wondering, not to jack the thread or anything, but if prekeying is a common and approved occurence, why are torsion lifts keys so frowned upon? I can see replacing your cranked t-bars with keys and then cranking those would be terrible for your driveline, but what about just installing the keys to return the t-bars to a normal angle with no crank? Just pondering:D

Because you're changing stock with stock. Basically converting the truck to an '07. Perfectly safe. Yes, your thoughts of the Prekey relating to those aftermarket lift keys is correct, they both do the same thing: clocking the bar's location in the key, thus creating lift. But one goes too extreme. The PreKey allows for the same height ability as the 07's, because well, it is essencially now an 07 model. If installed with the same bolt adjustment, a gain of 1.5" or so will be had on an 08-09 truck. Those aftermarket keys are clocked so much, that with the same bolt adjustment, you'll gain 3". Then ontop of that you could crank more and cause issues and having the ability to never align the truck. And to think, a maxed out 07 is pushing it already for BJ angles and CV angles...

No matter what, there's two things that come into play...adjustment bolt position and the hole in the torsion key that the bar slides into. I'd also add bar sag too, but thats a mute point. When the hole in the key is clocked(rotated), it's GOING to pivot that lower control arm, and inturn, changes balljoint angles and CV shaft angles. Add the adjustment bolt adjustment, and it's got major pivot of that lower arm. The aftermarket lift keys do this to an extreme that quite frankly, is a stupid idea for the life of your parts, your ride quality, and your wallet.

"but what about just installing the keys to return the t-bars to a normal angle with no crank?"

the adjustment bolt may be completely be out of the passenger side to obtain that.

/end hack. there's a stickied thread here about the prekey vs lift key.

Thanks for the explanation. I must have missed that sticky, should've used that good ol' search bar but I was just following the rythm of the thread. I never considered keys due to all that wear but I see the stock-to-stock point. If Ford did it with warranty's you have absolutely nothing to worry about, but some aftermarket companies can be dicey just to make a couple bucks.

Thanks again
