what muffler would sound best if its cut and exits out the side before the rear tire?

You're going to get as many different answers as there are mufflers...

I'd suggest going on youtube and just start listening to people's exhaust clips on their 3.0 ranger and see which one you like best then go from there.

will having it exiting the side before the tire(shorter distance in the pipe and turn out) effect the sound at all?

Everything affects the sound to a certain extent. How many turns, which way they're facing, the diameter, etc.

But at least you'll get a starting point.

Not really. I threw a dynomax cat-back on there, but only as a cheap way to quiet down the rusted out pipes that it had when I bought it.

Exhausts don't really do much for these trucks, so in the case of my 2.3 Lima a custom setup is only good for advertising how hard my little 4 banger is struggling to keep up with traffic.
