i have a 2004 ranger fx4 4.0 ...i was driving and all of a sudden all the guages sputtered and the truck just shut down ...i let it sit there for a while and then it started right up ...after driving it for so long it just shut down again and it would just crank and nothing ...so i left it there for about 4 hrs then i came back changed the fuel filter thinking that could be the problem. That wasnt it...so we let it sit it for about 4 hrs then it started up just fine so i gunned it home which was about 8 miles away and it drove fine on the highway but as soon as the idle went down it would sputter then just die. So had a mechanic come check it out said it was the fuel pump so replaced that and the alternator and still nothing the truck still will not start...the same mechanic came out again and is telling me its the computer...just wanted to ask what some of yall thought it was ...sorry for making it so long any help would be appreciated thanks

when it first broke down there was one but then after i drove it home the light wouldnt come back on ...so i hooked it up anyways and it said that there wasnt any error codes

Hi There:
Is that the original battery in your truck? If it is I would have it load tested at auto zone. When batteries start to get weak they cause all kinds of weird things to occur. They do this for free.If the battery check is ok, have them pull the trouble codes as you stated that the check engine light came on.Their scan tool will pin point the problem & eliminate guess work. This is free also.

When it dies, I hookup a fuel pressure gauge to test port. If that turns out, I would check your grounds.

i've been having the same sort of problem. with throttle past half it will hesitate about a third of the time. Eventually it just died driving down the road. i thought it was a fuel pump relay so i swapped it with a wiper relay and it ran for about two miles then died again. i put a shunt in for the realay contacts and checked my inertia switch in the pass kick but still no go. crank with no start.

got to thinking when i got home and went ahead and bypassed the inertia switch by cutting it out and connectiong the wires together... truck started and ran fine. test drove it for a while, drove it to work for a week. now its starting it tentativly again...

i'd give that switch a shot first. its cheap to replace and easy to bypass.

have you tested your throttle position sensor?
