Ok - forgive me if this has been asked a ***%$ load but:

What kind of hub assembly does my 03 level II have? Auto or Manual?

The reason why I ask is cuz I'm pretty sure my driver side bearings are shot, so Ill need to replace them. But with which kind?

Ive read some forums etc, that say the Auto hubs are junk (if I have them) and manual conversion is the way to go.
thanks for the much needed info guys :3gears:

You don't have a locking hub (auto or manual). You have a live axle and there are no options for bearing replacement. Just order a wheel bearing cartridge assembly for an 03 4WD Ranger.

You have a wheel bearing assembly where the axle passes through the hub assembly and is secured via a 32mm nut at the end.

These bearings are non-serviceable and must be replaced as a unit. Order up the assembly and install it yourself, it's quite easy.

Yes, they work exactly like a front wheel drive vehicle.

Alright -so the hub was easy to throw in. I lucked out and found a set on an explorer from the junker for 15 bux.
but now Im wondering what guys with the new generation (i think 98+) Rangers do without the locking hubs? It would seem when your on the trail these older drivelines have an advantage...?

1998-early 2000 was the era of PVH hubs (pulse vaccum).

In late 2000 model year they switched over to a live axle setup. No hubs at all. Very similar to a front wheel drive car. The only disconnecting that is done is at the transfer case.

The only gripe I have heard about that setup is the unit bearings. Most people like knowing the hub is something they don't have to worry about anymore.
