02 Ranger 3.0 at issues

A buddy of mine has a 2wd regular cab ranger with the 3.0. idk what trans is in it, or really know anything about it other than it doesn't catch gear quick... its delayed to catch any gear from P or N.
does anyone know possible reasons for this?
or what other vehicle have the same trans that he can get and swap out?
what trans is in that truck...?

Slow engagement could suggest any number of problems. Would probably need to know the year so we know which trans might be in the truck. Some basics regardless of trans model would be fluid level, fluid/filter change, and kickdown linkage (if applicable). If all those check ok, you could have problems with the pump, worn clutch packs/bands, internal seal(s) leaking, or valve body problems just to name a few.

the fluid has been changed... i think he's wanting to swap trans completely. what trans is in a 00 ranger? what else has a trans that will bolt up?
