Hey,
I have an 01 ranger that will not shift into 4wheel. I tested the motor since everybody says that is usually the culprit and it tested fine. I put battery voltage to it and moved it into 4-lo and back so I know the motor it fine. I can't find any more information on it though the chiltons manual is crap it doesn't even give you a complete wiring diagram for the truck. I need to know what fuses are in the circuit and if there are any relays involved. I checked the switch on the dash and have 5V at the switch is that right? I don't know since I can't even find a test procedure for it. The lights on the dash don't light up at all but I checked all the fuses I could find and they checked fine. Does anybody know how to check the 4WD module on this particular year or does anybody have a wiring schematic for the system? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

well from what i can tell from lookin at the haynes manual, the 4wd switch is wired into the instrument panel lighting circuit. you said you have a chiltons manual, maybe you should get a haynes manual, and check out chapter 12.

my 01 did it a few times try unhooking the battery and letting it sit for 15 minutes. mine was cause i left it in 4lo and shut the truck off didnt think about it and shifted to 2wd with the engine off and didnt think about it. might just need to reset itself

My 01 is doing the exact same thing. I can't figure it out. Let me know what you find if anything.

5 volts is correct. for the switch as it only sends a signal. The parts that actually do the moving should be recieving 12v. (someone correct me if iM worng) From what Ive read the 4wd modue is under the kickplate in the pass floor. In the tech library on the homepage. should be everything you need. There should only be two fuse panels. One under the dash and one under the hood. Check up under the truck and see if maybe any wires got pulled loose, etc.

How many miles? Your 01 is also the type that the front running gear is always engaged and the transfer case sends power to the front or it dont. Its fulltime locked (hubs) I htink I read somewhere that it uses a clutch for this, which could have gone out. BUt not having lights on the dash leads me to believe you have an electrical issues. Maybe relays.
