Used the '97 to jumpstart the '00 Explorer so I could use it to tow the boat for the test run...
Boat test run went good, had a couple new water leaks one from the sand trap being loose which was an easy fix, the other is the exhaust hose on one side is loose apparently, I'll probably move the...
I'm kinda wondering if the timing belt gave up the ghost. That won't stop spark but it would make it mad, if there were any popping and backfiring it can break a iffy belt or make one jump a tooth, happened to me once...
Yeah, I've done it twice, as long as you have the N/A block to make a template it's not horrible... you'll also need the DIS front seal housing, more on that later... I've typed this up several times before but here goes...
Take a piece of thin cardboard (cereal box, beer box, whatnot...) and...
Yes, that... and I should have clarified the M5OD and A4LD are the same, I don't know if the TK's they used through '92 behind 2.9L's are interchangeable... There were several transmission lengths through the 80's with different front driveline lengths and those dang different shift linkages...
If you find a 1354 T case out of a '90 or newer Ranger/Explorer there is no linkage difference on those but you would have to grab the front driveline out of what you get it out of but it'll bolt in...
I don't get pics off my phone much but here's a somewhat time lapse of the boat progress over the last few weeks:
If anyone is questioning the black crank pulley, there's a chrome one but it was clicking and out of center so it was ditched...
Kept tinkering and it's pretty much together... got coolant in, mounted the battery switch in a different location that's more accessible then got both batteries wired up. All plumbing done, all mounting bolts are installed and tightened and the engine is even straight... I even did some cleanup...
On a lot of stock 4x4's the stock tire size was 235 75 15 so you should be just fine, you can go to 31x10.5 but then the lower front corners of the front fenders would likely rub if I remember right (I'm used to '89-92 which isn't as much of an issue)
For seats since you seem to go to junkyards a fair amount keep an eye on Explorers, all the seats will bolt to your current seat tracks through about '02 and the ones with the movable front section are pretty comfortable.
Sounds like a solid amount of work but like you said it's no where near...
A coworker came out this morning and we threw the engine in my boat, he's worked on many of the engine swaps on the boats at work so experience helped... we had to make some adapter plates to move the engine mount feet like 3" forward but quickly plasma cut out some 3" wide 1/4" steel plate and...
Me too, that's why I plan to do that with the V8 explorer, D60 guts with equal length D44 TTB beams getting 18" or thereabouts of travel per corner... I have $200 wrapped up into 4 axles (a D44 TTB, a D50TTB and two 10.25's) that I've had for years waiting on the time... I know you know how that...
My best and most educated guess is crank sensor, they do silly things when they stop working... next guess would be the DIS module on the front of the intake that interprets the crank sensor input... I've never broke one of those and I've been really mean to it but I have had a bad crank sensor...
Yes, the one and only difference between an N/A and turbo block is the turbo oil drainback hole a bit above the oil pan rail... they have the same bore as a standard and since the cylinder pressure is less the chances of a tapered bore are less on an N/A block...
My week got kinda dumb, on Friday it got decided that I would go to the FL/AL gulf coast area to help work on a fire boat with one of our engines in it for the fire pump... Traveling Tuesday wasn't horrible but by the time we got to the Pensacola area Wednesday it was 92F at 9am (flew into...
You can go easy on that, I know for a fact the center section will bolt to the D44 TTB beam, it's a slightly bigger ring gear but has D60 splines into the spider gears I think and takes D60 U joints and outer axle shafts. Google up a Jana 54, if I get a wild hare I'll pull up some links I have...
I've been gone on business most of the week and just got back to Oregon at like 10AM (was supposed to land at 12AM, more on that elsewhere...) so the '97 was parked at the airport for most of the week. Tonight on the other hand it did some work, work ran and set the timing on my new to me boat...
