waterproof distributor cap

I heard there's a way to water proof my distributor cap. has anyone here done it?

You don't have a distributor cap. Your engine (if it's the 4.0 in your user details) has EDIS (Electronic Distributorless Ignition System).

why do you want a waterproofed distributor anyways? they are quite water resistant, and if you are getting it wet on a regular basis, a) there is other things you should be worrying about over the distributor getting that wet, or B) you have a cap that needs to be replaced because it's not sealing well enough to keep spray out...

@wakingtowinter, I was taking it offroading a couple times and when i took it through some deep puddles it would just stop running and i thought that was wat it was

It could be that...i never had the problem with my ford yet, but i had a suzuki sidekick, and the distributer would get water sprayed on it and it would not run for like 30 mins. or untill you dried the distributer out....i used a couple ziplock bags, zip ties, and duct tape...haha i know, it was redneck but it worked fine...

These boots work pretty well in the link below. But yeah, you should have EDIS. How deep is the water you're going through? Is it possible your truck inhaled some water?

EDIT: You may also be getting your crank position sensor wet, and that could cause it........just a thought.

now sure about your truck, but in my 07, i bombed a few 4-6" deep puddles with my truck, i have more lift than the puddle was deep, they didn't come even close to my hubs really, and i sucked dirt and mud past my filter and had to change my maf... if you got the maf dirty, it could have killed it for sure...

Clear coat! i used to race a 88bronco II 2.9 tuff truck and the first time i hit the water hole it died.. distributor was soaked.. a few old timers told me a trick using a clear coat... spray a bunch of layers on the distributor worked awesome..

@shane96ranger the puddle was only like a foot or 2 deep and it only happened after the splash of hitting the puddle, and after it sat for 15 mins it was fine and i ran it out of the puddle. i just looked at it and it does have the EDIS, sorry. and not sure the crank position sensor is

That is a common issue on old sensors actually. Water on the sensor can cause lots of issues if the casing has a small crack.

Try a new CKP sensor.

not sure what they are worth, but it might be easier to test if that's the issue with a squirt bottle of water being sprayed on the sensor at an idle and seeing if it runs, rather than replacing the part, wouldn't you agree?

Yeah, a water test may help pinpoint a problem component. Those sensors aren't super expensive.

Spraying WD40 on things such as sensors and the dizzy help to repel water as well
