Carb gurus, can you please help?

good plan....but keep in mind that out of the box the new carb will be tuned for an 'average' type of setting.as there is no way for holley to know what application it's going on some tuning is expected.you may get lucky, but you may also get more of an education on carbs than you'd figured on.

Yeah, and we live in Salt Lake which is somewhere around 4300 feet above sea level. I'm sure it's going to need a little adjustment. Mostly we just want to start with a clean slate. My friend had the other carb rebuilt, but the guy who did it told him it was missing parts......but I don't know what parts those were.

That's the good thing about Holley (and FoMoCo/Motorcraft) carbs. Very few parts when rebuilding, and great tune-ability. I think there's what....22-24 pieces total on a Motorcraft 4v? Not too many more on a Holley 1850/4160.

So, IMO, the carb-ucation that may arise will at least from a good "teacher"!

I would up yanking the factory Holley off of my 85 GT and putting an Edelbrock 1406 on it. It ran a lot better after that!

the factory holley on the mustang has the same problem as the first carb in this thread-while it outwardly looks a lot like the 4160,there are actually very few parts that swap between them.
i've run plenty of edelbrock carbs(and carters, which is what they were called before edelbrock bought them out)and the have some good features.one thing i really like about them is that you can access the float bowls without spilling gas all over, and they are very simple.they also handle rough terrain better than a holley.
but for overall tuneability and performance,i still always seem to go back to the 4150 or 4160 holley....especially when off-idle performance is key(i swiched the edelbrock on the wheelie b2 to a 4160 to get the snap off the line i wasn't able to tune into the edelbrock)
another interesting comparison is that i found the edelbrock performs better in steep inclines, but the holley runs better when the truck is on it's side.i've actually driven the ranger back onto it's wheels before after flopping it,running a 750cfm 4150.

That was what I liked about the FoMoCo/Motorcraft 4v that was on the Datsun's 302....keep the gas where it belongs!

yup....that's another carb i've played with lots....but somehow i keep going back to the holley.it's quick to have a couple extra metering plates already set up to swap by just removing 4 screws.
