jumpy mouse

i have a hp g61 laptop that i absolutely hate... long story as to why i have it... it sucks balls... anyways, recently the mouse has started to get really jumpy, i use the trackpad built in to the computer, while moving it around the page it randomly skips across the page to the other side of the screen for no apparent reason... if i restart the computer when it does this, it continues doing it... it doesn't always do it, and i can't seem to find any sort of pattern to what i'm doing, how long it's running or anything else, other than it seems to be when i'm in bed using it it does it a little more... when i do use it in bed, i sit it up on my wallet or something, to give ventlation for the vents and fans...

anyone have any ideas for this?

Does it have a track ball? There is usually dust or something on the tracking mechanism when that happens...you need to take it apart and clean it...

If it's built into the computer you may want to use an external mouse if you're not sure how to clean it..then take it to a repair shop to see if they can do it for you...

If it's an optical mouse...your driver may be wonky or the mouse is pooched...

no like the trac/touch pad on my laptop... it sometimes does it when it's dirty, but it's clean... it's almost like i'm touching it with a second finger...

My netbook does that sometimes. It turns out I was in fact touching it with a second finger.

What about your third and fourth fingers? Have you checked those?

Hmmmm...do you have six fingers, perhaps?

There is a computer at the library that does that sometimes...really annoying...but it has an optical mouse...I found that if I removed the mouse pad (not really needed with an optical mouse anyway) it clears it up...

I have this issue with my optical mouse as well, it's a biproduct of my cat climbing on my desk. Their hairs get stuck over the optical lens sooner or later.


But this doesn't really make a difference because the laptop in question has a touch pad.

nope, no 6th finger on either hand, and before someone (topher) asks, i'm not touching it with my other hand, my feet, nose or any other appendage

i'm thinking something with programming... maybe heat?

Yes, those touchpads can be annoying too...that's why I usually hook up an external mouse...

i do, depending on what i'm doing, i've got one right now, because i was playing some starcraft 2, to kill the time on this 12 hour shift... but if i'm in bed watching some *cough* movies, it's not feasible

edit: i should be clear on this, the touchpad is completely clean and free of all other substances, items, people, things, vehicles...

It seems that touch pads are notorious for being glitchy. Personally, I hate them and avoid using it at all costs. It's quite possible that the problem isn't the driver or the specs of the computer, rather cheap hardware.

As mentioned, I'd also highly recommend picking up an optical mouse. More specifically, a laser mouse, as they're the most precise and will track better on a wider variety of surfaces.

I'm a big fan of LogiTech mice with the "nano receiver". The receiver that plugs into the USB port is tiny and hardly sticks out, so you can leave it plugged in full time.
