The problem is not the vehicle, it's not the traction-control, it's the all-season tires. Get some dedicated winter tires.

People's pockets don't go that deep. Most people are cheap and really don't get good tires when they are told to get new tires.

I'm waiting for the ice storm here. So many people with bald tires. All I gotta do is dress warm, pop open a soda, and sit back to watch the action.

Snow tires wouldn't help shit when a wheel slips a tiny bit and the computer shuts it down to the point where you are stopped and have to start over again. Yes the stupid thing is that sensitive. My aunt is talking about buying this pos when the lease is up in a few months, and I'm pleading with he to let them have it back. Me myself, I am like you guys. I would NEVER EVER buy a vehicle with any of that electronic nanny garbage on it especially for what something like that costs. Problem for me is around here (SW PA) older vehicles are getting harder to find because they are rotting away. Don't even get me started on the shit they pour on the roads here that's a totally different rant. I feel bad for people in years to come who can't afford a new vehicle, but don't know how to work on a vehicle themselves. Most will end up buying the garbage that is new now and have to deal with the electronic shit that will probably start failing.

Ain't that the truth. I told the grandson of the one woman I work with that he needed NEW tires.

When one blew he went to the JY and bought 4 tires that were just as bad as the ones he had on there before. Then he paid the hour to have them put on.

Winter tires aren't that much, LJ. And if you do it right (on just before the weather turns, off when it's consistently 45 degrees and above), winter tires will last a good 5 years. I'm on my fifth season with my Blizzaks for the Camry. They're just under the first set of wear-bars and even in the worst conditions I still have no problem getting started.

If they cheap out on tires - or don't buy new tires until theirs are bald, they have nobody but themselves to blame when they can't move.

I agree. Abs I can deal with, you can feel it working, and play with the pressure, everything else is going to far. Traction control for one. The one thing that really irks me is how they've done away with throttle cables. An electric motor on the throttle body? What's the point of that? It can't be cheaper than a small cable, and that's just going to cause problems. There's no way, atleast in my opinion, that its more durable than a cable. Not to mention, if the cable breaks, car doesn't rev that's worst case. What happens if that motor shorts out? Not to mention the cost of a new one.
I knew theyd cause a problem and sure enough Toyota starts a recall.

The one thing that really irks me is how they've done away with throttle cables. An electric motor on the throttle body? What's the point of that? It can't be cheaper than a small cable, and that's just going to cause problems.

Electronic throttle actuation allows for better throttle response and tighter fuel delivery control, thus better emissions. Also, there's no chance for slack in the throttle cable which cannot help but occur with use, and which will affect throttle response.

Yeah, it's definitely not just Toyota, that's applying this nonsense to newer vehicles. The only Toyota I would consider buying, is a late 80's/early 90's regular cab short bed 4x4. However I have a couple perfectly good Ford, American built trucks, so yota's are out of the question.

Traction control should be to assist in aiding traction. Not limit the power to prevent traction loss. I hate it too when those big thinkers don't build things right and make it worse. I think the idea they had in mind was on wet roads to prevent the vehicle from sliding out of control due to too much throttle input.

This reminds me when I got the 4x4 Blazer stuck in 3 feet of snow. I was just fooling around and giving the 4x4 a little test. So I was going slow in 4Lo. Blazer bottomed out and I got stuck. I had to rock the vehicle back & forth, turn the wheel from side to side, and spin the tires to dig for traction, to wiggle myself free. After about 5 minutes, I got it free and went on my way. If that would have happened in a new vehicle (like that Rav4), I would have been screwed. All thanks to those new Traction Control systems.

Here is a question. Doesn't the new 2010 Rangers come with the Traction Control System? And how are those fairing in the snow and ice?

The Rangers with traction control seem to be working out just fine. We have one at work (although I don't get to drive it much, since it's the newer truck the other guy drives it all the time), but he's still able to slide it around the parking lot. Of course, it also has a button to disable the traction control, so if it's causing more problems than it's solving, you can just hit the button and fix the problem. At least someone at Ford was smart enough to realize that not everyone would want the traction control working all the time.

I remember reading one of those "truck shootouts" that car and driver had a few years back.

They took the fleet of trucks out to the dessert to give them a run......this included the Escalade!

Now, I don't know what they were thinking when they did this, but in all their wisdom, they sent the Caddy up a sand dune and were surprised when it got stuck. Not just stuck though...after it dug in, all the t/c features kicked in and they couldn't even back it down the dune!

They wound up sending a 1 ton dually up the dune to fish the Caddy out.

The Caddy got bad reviews because of this. WTF man??

I hate all these devices that supposedly make our vehicles easier to drive in bad road conditions.They try to take the human element out of it and just make everything worse.Traction control should be an electric or air locker and full power.If I screw up my vehicle because I can't drive that's my fault.
