Okay I have my 93 up and running and it has the 4 cyl I am sure it is the 2.3?? I was told that is uses like a quart every 75 miles or so as I recall and it does smoke. After reading the tech area I see that oil consumption can be due to the valve stem seals. Should I replace them? I am guessing a compression test is also a good idea at this point. Also if I wanted to drive it a little as it is what oil type and weight would be best?? I know 5w30 is what I run in my 97. Thanks for any info.

you are probably looking at a valve stem and yes a compression test at each cylinder would verify which and how many. I would use what Ford reccomends for oil (though you might burn a bit more using 5w30) it is probably better for winter start-ups. I am not sure if the 2.3 or 2.5L has one, but if applicable, a PCV valve can help illiminate some oil burning.

Lucas Oil Stabilizer may help reduce the oil consumption.

As for valve seals, I thought the symptom was smoking for a couple seconds on start-up only? :icon_confused:

Just throwing that out there.

Thanks for the help guys I will get the oil changed and the valve also.

hey my truck does the same thing with the smoking at startup and the oil consumption, however when i get into higher rpms it smokes also? is this piston rings, valve seals?

take your valvecover off turn itoveryou will see two rivited pans both of witch are oil deflectors. clean them, your valve seals only leak if the engines over heated or exstemly old and only in cold starts after a long soak time. if it allways is smoking at low rpms pcv system is clogged thus the above repair is effective. yes on compression test and oil is 10w30 in high temp and normal use at min loads is 5w30.

that will only tell you which one. you could be looking at a blown headgasket, a cracked piston or blown piston rings. yes a valve seal is a possibility also.
