what fluid is best for my M5OD transmission?

my m50d came out of a 98 (?) explorer. and has been run with dex/merc for the last two years. it shifts smoothly, however it likes to pop out of first gear when climbing hard over bumpy terrain. it also has a bit of a bearing noise that i think is related to the throw out bearing. wonder if some syncromax is worth a try for me

I just put pennzoil sychromax in my truck, shift quality is a bit better, less noisy as well. I had Mercon V in there for about 6 months, but it shifted real notchy with it.

Yeah it seems to be too slippery for the synchros on older M5ODs.

I agree. I know if it's too slippery it takes too long for the synchros to sync up. The mobile 1 atf had the problem of being too thick plus being too slippery. The synchros wouldn't sync up very well and when the tranny was cold, it was hard shifting period. I dump mobile 1 atf and switched back to redline d4-atf.
Another issue I have with Mobile 1 atf, that crap has too much sulfur in it and caused the inside of my cab to smell like rotten eggs. MERCON and redline d4-atf did not do that to me.

I've been running Redline MTL in mine for a year now. It was a junkyard transmission and made noise with regular ATF. The MTL quieted it down a lot. Shifting is much improved also.

If your transmission is in good condition and not making noise, you'll probably want to stick with regular Mercon rated ATF though.

Is Redline MTL a fully synthetic, or is it a synthetic blend, instead?

What viscosity weight does it have and what stores sell it?

On the website, Bob the Oil Guy, people are saying their trannys shift a lot better and run a lot quiter using Redline MtL in them, instead of when they were using ATF in their M50D transmissions.

It would be interesting to see what everyone elses opinion is about using it on this website, too, if you used it, before, in place of ATF in your M50D tranny and what results you had.

The two links I posted show the viscosity is roughly equivalent to regular ATF, maybe a hair higher. Redline stuff is fully synthetic.

You can get it through most any online retailer (Jegs, Summit, etc). I have bought some at Advance Auto before. You can even buy it direct from Redline.
