We just ordered lube oil for our punch press at our shop and it is Mobil DTE B B 50 weight. My question is since we have a 5 gallon bucket of it and we will never use all of it, can i use it in my 1997 7.3 Powerstroke? Im thinking not but i just wanted to check to make sure im stupid before i do something stupid.

Well, I'm not too familiar with the particulars of Mobil DTE B B 50 weight, but I wouldn't. I somewhat doubt that it has the proper viscosity over the entire temp range. I also seriously doubt that it has all the proper detergents and such that diesel oil has to keep the engine from gumming itself up.

just use rotella... don't test it, i would have to hear the motor is blown in that powerstroke

There is way more to oil than the right viscosity. Engine oils have detergents, rust inhibitiors, viscosity index improvers, and tons of other additives that it needs to stand up in an engine environment. The same applies to ATFs, gear oils, and basically any other oil. Different base stocks and addtives for different applications. Hydraulic oil does not have to deal with combustion byproducts that engine oils do, so they don't have any additives do deal with them. Also, as grbily pointed out, it's not even close to a 50 weight engine oil. They use different scales for every kind of oil. A 90 weight gear oil, for example, is about equivalent in viscosity to a 30 weight motor oil becasue they use different scales for engine oils and gear oils.

In short, DON'T DO IT.

Just use it to increase your fire starting capabilities...

Go ahead and use it if you want to invest a lot of $ (15K) for a new motor.

From someone that just bought one.

RonV :) :) :)

I wonder though - how long would a Ranger engine run on 220 weight oil? Since a 2.9 doesn't get any oil to the upper end anyway, it might run forever. JK

i see an chance for an experment...:icon_welder:

Hey I've seen the pics of the red thang. Your acronym was wrong for RBE though - that would be Ranger Based Envy.
