daily doubler build

Got my truck stripped down. Got the low down on the 94 explorer and I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with the uncertainties. Supposedly he lady he got it from swears it runs, but there's no starter on it, so to get it to run I'd have to buy a starter for an auto, then when I swapped it I'd have to buy a starter for my m5od, plus I'll have to deal with the obd1 vs obd2 blah blah blah.

I think I'm gonna wait a week or two and see if I can find a 95+ 4.0L. We'll see how it goes.

just leave that doubler out and ill come pick it up this week :D

Meh, I wouldn't waste a trip on it. I pick it up all the time. Its a bit awkward and probably weighs ~65lbs. Nothing special.

:thefinger:

ehh its no biggie ill go ahead and come...ill be sure to leave a complete 1354m and 1350m in its place...i figure its a fair trade

Bray I sent you a PM back. I may have another starter for an auto of you need to hear the exploder run.

The organ donor has been admitted to the hospital :D

Picked up the explorer today. Long story short, the guy had to remove the remote start that was installed on it to give to the original owner, so I'm not going to mess with trying to get it to run. That'll save me some money too.

Plan is to strip it down to just the motor by early next week. Hope to start pullin engines next weekend.

I need to start researching 4.0 mods since I'll have it opened up for inspection anyways.

Heard back from the guy with a 4.0 m5od case as well. Hopefully I'll have that in the next couple weeks so I can swap my 3.0 internals into it.

There's a long ways to go, but things are starting to come together - parts wise.

its going to feel like a whole new truck, i love getting on the steep hills and climbing them in 2nd gear low and 500rpm...just chuggin :D

About time you put a real engine in that thing....well its still not a real engine but its a little closer....Should be interesting to watch....Good luck...

We hit up Trucks Gone Wild yesterday, so I didn't get a whole lot done this weekend.

Got it into the shop, on jackstands, pulled the driveshaft, and stripped the auto trans of its electronics/shifters. I'm hoping to pull the trans Tuesday. That'll put me on schedule to start pulling engines this weekend.

It SUCKS working on a stock height vehicle. I can sit comfortably Indian style under my truck. I can barely get under this thing with a creeper.

Here's a few pics for fun:

Thanks man. I'm pretty excited.

Did a little number crunching to get some numbers. Number are good.

Here's what I came up with:

The 3.0 makes 162 peak torque. OHV 4.0 makes 220 peak torque. That makes the 4.0 a 35.8% increase in torque over the 3.0 if you look strictly at the torque numbers.

The kicker is what trans you use. If you use a 4.0 m5od, the gear ratios in the tranny are numerically lower than those in the 3.0 m5od. So your effective torque increase won't be that 35.8% over the 3.0 (since the 3.0 will obviously be using the numerically higher geared 3.0 trans).

Using the 4.0 trans, the percent increase in torque over the 3.0L is 24.12%, 26.54%, and 18.60% for gears 1-3 respectively. Gears 4 and 5 are the same in both the 3.0 and 4.0 case, giving the effective torque increase of 35.8% as calculated previously.

Using the 3.0 trans with the 4.0 yields the 35.8% increase in effective torque for all of the gears, obviously.

I'd say using the 3.0 internals in the 4.0 case is well worth the effort.

I just sent money for a 4.0 trans case tonight. My 3.0 trans internals will be living in there :D

I guess what all this was getting at was I'll be seeing a significant increase in performance, even if I just keep the 4.0 stock. While I have it out I'd like to have some machine work done (gasket matching, head work, etc) that may increase torque as well. We shall see.

i think ill be doing some motor work myself soon, some slight porting anolng with a cam should help quite a bit...i dont need a ton of power but the extra little bit of torque would be nice here and there with a 5 speed

Bray D, what you doing with the leftover donor exp, I'm interested if you decide to get rid of it...
Slovo, I hear a set of headers gives big performance and economy...of course you could always turbo it, and if you want to, I've got some you can use on it...

ive got headers on it...turbo's would be a nightmare on a trailrig...i need trq down low

Dual turbo's from a Tbird TC have worked exceptionally well for trail rigs, boost and power down low are great...
