Can A Stock Dana 35 TTB Handle 35's?

Can a stock dana 35 TTB handle 35s? I am regearing this fall and might as well go big or go home right? Could the explorer axle shafts fit in the stock dana 35? I know those were 31 spline if that would help... Should I just fork out the cash for a dana 44? It might be cheaper to regear then too, Im having a shop do the front and back. If I get the dana 44 they wouldnt have to pull it out of the truck.

Here is the list of axles and what they can max handle... Im not a hardcore rock crawler but I do wheel decently hard and every year wheel a little harder and harder as the truck gets more capable.

This will give you a D35 with more strength than a solid axle D44, or so I've heard. Give it a shot.

There's been a lot of threads of discussion about tiresizes and the D35 (and just about every other common axle too)...

Short answer: Yes it can handle 35s without a problem, though the stock locking hubs are a bit marginal (they're as easy as pie to swap). However if you're a "pedal-to-the-metal" don't care about no right line type, then nothing smaller than a D60 is probably what you'd need.

Take a look through the Axles section (also check through the Suspensions sections). Should answer most of your questions.

I'd run 35" tires on a Dana 35. The numbers match, it was meant to be.

In fact, some day I probably will run 35s on a Dana 35. But first I've got to wear out my 32" tires and Dana 28 (or maybe I will just upgrade the D28 when I get around to it).

36" Swamper TSL/SX's here on my D35...very minimal carnage so far....been running 35"+ tires on it for 5 years now.

It probably sees nowhere near the stresses of most rigs as It looks like you don't actually drive it on the tires

Yeah, that guide above seems to be a copy-&-paste from a large national magazine (with some RBV-specifics thrown into it). I would guess maybe they were considering it with having the stock OE hubs on it (those ratings seem to be a little conservative on just about every axle aside from the D28). However hubs are the first thing to get upgraded on just about ANY axle, not just the D35. It alone makes a pretty big difference.

I wheeled with 35 x 15.50s, no problems, no problems with new 35x12.5s. I don't go easy on it either. I was flinging mud 20 feet in the air the last time I went out.

Just don't expect a locker to not kill it, don't floor it lock to lock and check your bearings after you wheel.

I agree...And don't get the Mile Marker hubs, too many people break em and buy the Warn's, including my truck's twin (railman), he had a set of MM's, and quickly "upgraded" to the Warn's after a Turkey Bay trip, I think our second trip there...

Nice, well I appreciate the insight guys. I do need to upgrade my hubs, I was going to run em till they blow but I might change em out early now. 35's and 4.88's here I come!

locker and powerlevel have allot to do with it. actual use is key.


generally the 35 is plenty stout for 35's.
