CARB legal headers

Passenger side collector dumps halfway on the frame, you would have to notch the frame to run the pipe.

2. Shelby type Tri-Y's and 85-93 Mustang Convertable mounts combined with a 157 tooth bellhousing. 3. Hedman 88400. Oh, and 1.? Is there ANYTHING legal in Kalifornia ?

1. yep........................Illegals.........sorry.....culdn't hep myself.....they're just trying to make everything as eco-friendly as possible in CA...so when the illegals take over...the blood-spatter from the drug wars will be easier for the part-time/unemployable Americans to clean up

There is plenty of legal stuff in CA, once I get all the hokie stuff taken care of, and some suspension work done my goal is to get some AFR 165s, they're CARB approved. Then there are plenty of approved intake manifolds and cams, it should scream and still be 99.9% legal (damn headers).

Does anyone happen to have a picture of what the passenger side 94-95 header looks like in a Ranger? I found a cheap set of 94-95 shorties and am willing to try what COPPERHEAD85 did, but am unsure whether or not the headers are cheap enough to justify the effort or if I should just stick with the 88400s.

Also, in terms of port shape, are the 88400s going to work with my '89 motor?

It looks just like one from a 83-93 Stang looks like. Except for the EGR port in one tube (if I recall correctly) All the Hedmans have oval shaped ports. There's no negative effects from this as far as flow. It does help to port the head to open it up to improve the flow though (do the port roof and walls, leave the floor alone) The 88400's are better flow wise than the stock ones

A pic would really be worth 1000 words if someone has one floating around about how these things fit, either set (fox or SN-95)

The trick is, with COPPERHEAD85's hooker headers the tubes already go into one pipe before the collector. With the SN-95 headers you have four pipes that essentionally meet at the collector.

I have been mulling this around since I saw what he did by bending the passenger side the exit straight back instead of kicking out at an angle. So far I have come up with two options:

1. Try to heat the tubes and bend them. Dunno about the practicality since you would have to get all four tubes hot enough to bend at the same time.

2. Take it to a band saw and cut a pie slice out the engine side two tubes, heat the outer two tubes and reweld the inner tubes... and it will be tough to weld them all around and get a decent seal.

So far I haven't really come with anything that seems very practical. I got my set free, so I might end up running my 289 manifolds instead if I can't get these to work remotely decent.

Not speaking about this specific application, but this is a great method for modifying headers. Just slice/pie cut without cutting anything off.

I think I still have a 94-95 right side factory header if someone wants to pay me for my time to ship it to them.

I hadn't realized that stock 5.0 manifolds were tubular, I thought the 94-95 shorties I was seeing were just cheap aftermarkets. Knowing this I think that buying the Hedmans (and maybe cutting off the badge) will serve my purpose fine, no smog guy is going to know the difference between a stock 5.0 shorty and any other unequal shorty.

I have been seeing some super cheap stockers though. I was thinking that I could probably cut off the flange and just add a collector to get the necessary angle, then weld a new flange on. It looks simple enough, but the 88400s are so cheap it doesn't really seem worth the effort.

I can see that, but I don't how it would work doing mulitple tubes that close together.

Here is what the Hooker collector looked like before the chop...

After..

The differance between the two as far as collector goes,as said above, there is not much room on the Ford header to work with.

And the tube opening at the flange suck compared to the Hookers.

It was a lot of work to make this side fit but worth it IMO.
Got the passenger side done with muffler on last night at 6pm,first time I have heard the engine with mufflers!

My freakin roller rockers are loose as hell!

You didn't by chance get a pic of a unaltered header mounted in the truck did you? Even one how they are now would be great.

What is the orginal app. for the 88400's? Going to a Mustang swap meet in a little over a week and I might watch for a cheap set.

Nope because it hit the frame before you could get the bolts in the head (the Ford did not).
I cant find what the orginial app. was for.
On the truck....

If you score a set PM me and I go through all the details, help you all I can.

88400 = early 60's Fairlanes Falcons and Comets. The part numbers are attached to the headers

Does anyone have pics of the 88400s installed? I just got mine and it looks like I am going to need to redo my engine mounts for them to fit well (I knew it was likely beforehand) but even then it looks like they are going to be tight.

Also, has anyone had issues with the 88400s touching the bellhousing or starter? It looks like the flange on the collector will be close.
