V8 transplant into 1984 Ranger Questions???

Hello,

I have a 1984 2wd Ranger with a 2.0L 4cylinder and 4 speed transmission.

The engine is blown and I am thinking of droping in a 302 V8, but I have a couple questions.

Does the 1984 Ranger have more or less room in the engine bay than a 1990's or 2000's Ranger. I am wonder this because I see these swaps done here on the fourm and they look tight but doable and if the 84 has more room then I know that I would not have any or much troubble.

Also what would be the best manual transmission to install behind the 302?remeber that its 2wd so I dont have to worry about the transfer case.

Same amount of room as any 1994 and older. And the '95 and later are similar, but slightly different blower box and rad support.

The Mustang T5 is a popular trans.
 
The only real issue as to roominess is the length of the engine. Width isn't a factor other than the heater-A/C box. The shorter the FEAD is, the easier time you're going to have fitting a radiator(and fan) big enough to cool it. FEAD = Front End Accessory Drive
 
me and my dad are doing one in an '84, No header clearence problems, didn't need to notch the frame, it's tight between the water pump and radiator...but ford did make pumps with several snot lengths (pulley flange area), mines a Hi-flow Milidon pump so it's tight, the radiator is from a 4.0L explorer so hopefully with a 2000+ cfm pusher fan it will keep it cool. as far as manuals....Look hard for a T-5 from a 91-94 mustang cobra's (i believe that's the right years) they have the t-5 "Z" box which is built to handle 310ft lbs...
 
I'm putting a 289 with a C4 in my 84 replacing a 2.3 and 4 speed...
but I'm just starting out on this endeavor...need to figure the motor mounts out first

frankboss...get the mounts from a V6 and make a flat plate that bolts to the engine then drops over the studs on the mounts.

Or '86-'95 Mustang mounts, one piece, one hole to drill.
