Transmission
Automatic
1993 model auto 4.0 4x4. Can I flat tow it. I am buying and its far off so I dont want the added wait of a trailer.
If I can what do I do to make sure the trans and transfer case are ok.

Manual Transfer case? If so shift it into neutral and tow away.

Its its an auto shift t case, remove the rear drive shaft and tow away. Leave the transfer case in 2H.

This should all be covered in the owners manual...which is all the way in my truck's glove box.

I think it says not to tow an auto more than fifty miles, but I think if you use a car dolly you could just lock the front wheels straight, disengage the hubs and slap the dolly under the rear axle and tow it as far as you need to.

Been a while since I read through it.

pulling the rear shaft is easy, especially the second time... 12pt 12mm wrench and a dead blow hammer and about 5 minutes later it's off...

then just throw it in neutral and go to town man. Just make sure you have all the proper rigging in place.

Throw the TRANSFER CASE in neutral, NOT the transmission. I know that that's what you meant, but it easily could've been taken the other way. It needed to be clarified.

I have looked for a online Owners manual but they only go back to 1996. I just dont want to mess anything up. I already have to pull the engine out so I would like to make dang sure the trans and transfer case is ok.

The 96 manual should work. The only MAJOR difference between 3rd gen trucks (93-97) is that they added OBDII in 95

Look in the towing forum

there is a sticky topic labeled TOWING a ranger rather than towing WITH your ranger"
(or some similar title)

Manual T-case in neutral transmission IN GEAR (if manual) or PARK (if auto)

the transfer case has an internal oil pump that is driven by the T-case OUTPUT
(or the driveshaft that's bolted to it)

I know what the manual says about towing with the auto transfer case, but am wondering if I take the shift motor off and fine the neutral position. Then could I tow with all for wheels down? 2001 Sport Trac.

IIRC, neutral is between 4-lo and 4-hi.

But will the auto case work the same as the manual? Is the oil pump the same?
