I just bought the Aerostar finned 10" drums for my 99 Ranger 4x4, and they dont fit... the bolt holes and drum size are fine....

The HUB CENTERS are too small on the Aerostar drums and dont fit the axle. :dunno:

I have the Raybestos 9499 Drums for the 1996 Aerostar

Can anyone help me... is there a specific part number or brand that I should be getting that will fit the hub center???

Thank you in advance.

Im coming up with a part no. 9499R for the raybestos brand, but im not sure what the R means. whats the advantage of the aerostar drum over the ranger 10" drum?

I thought about that ... we are talking about removing .100" from the hub-center of the drum of the Aerostar drum to have it fit the ranger axle

I have concerns about it running "true" on the shaft and getting uneven wear and feedback to the brake pedal.

Many people on here have talked about the aerostar drums being the way to go....

IS this NOT a "bolt on" upgrade or am I just getting the wrong parts (Rabestos 9499 for a '96 Aerostar)??

Thank you in advace for your help..

Rock Auto and others list the the same application for the 9499 and the 9499R

The 9499 is the more expensive of the 2 rotors though and is designated as the "Pro Grade PLUS"

the 9499R is designated as the "Pro Grade"

Does anyone have any personal experience installing the Aerostar drums on a later model 8.8" rear axle equipped Ranger as a BOLT ON?

I'm beginning to believe it is an urban-myth that these simply bolt on to the rear axle.

I'd love to install them if I can find some that bolt on.

Well, this site doesn't make up tech articles, so clearly someone was extrapolating their experience and applied it too far.

Looking further at Rock Auto, it does appear that something changed in 98, as the 10" drum applications are separated between 84-97 and 98+ generations. Additionally, the 84-97 rotors on the Ranger _DO_ cross reference with a first gen Aerostar (which is probably why the swap works on 97 and earlier trucks), #2603. The 98+ part is 9498, and also cross references with the Gen 1 Explorer axle.

Did the 98+ Rangers come with 28 or 31 spline axles? That's the only guess I have as to the reason why things are cross referencing with what. If that theory were correct, then the Aerostar would have a 28 spline axle and you would have a 31 spline (or Ford switched the hub/whatever on your truck to match the 31 spline axle). But it's just a guess by me.

All rangers except Fx4 Level 2's have 28 splines. All years.

Explorer's running gear got updated in.. 95? See if there is a cutoff year there as well. I'm wondering if when ford went IFS (95+ Explorers, and 98+ Rangers) the rear axle hub diameter changed.

I know I have Aerostar drums on my 1994 8.8" axle.

And atleast until 1997 the Aerostar drums fit.

If I have time this weekend I'll measure my axle center pilot and
the hole in the drum.

"IF I have time" means I get to pull my bed (again) and replace my
rear tank fuelpump (again) because the pump died on the rear tank.

Annoying thing is, that's the tank with the gas in it...

just got a areostar drum today, (would have got both , but they only had one in stock, will get tomarrow) it fits my '93 8.8 ranger fine, asked for a areostar drum for a '93 2wd 4.0 areostar van, dont have the part # handy. boy there is one heck of a difference in weight! id bet its double, i know the newer stuff may be different but the upgrade does work for my old iron. i'll have to take some comparasoin pics.

Did you have 10'' drums stock? Have you noticed a difference?

I've got them on my 88...they're all nice and shiny blue with the special brake paint...till I start driving it, that is...

When i looked online at autozone the website only had a 12'' drum for Aerostar.

heres a pic of both drums, obviously the bigger drum is the "areostar" drum

i did have 10" drums stock, and all in all i dont know that you would notice a difference going from 10" stock drums to the areostar spec drums in normal driving. i did tighten up my adjusters some when i put my new drums on, so i do have a better pedal now, but that would be the case with any drum setup be it 9", 10" stock or upgraded. the benefit is when your stopping the larger drums will take more heat and not develop brake fade as soon and there is alot less chance of drum warpage or cracking. the fins around the drum also help it cool back down when your rolling again. sure, a disc brake setup would be a better upgrade and give more noticeable improvement as far as stopping, but im not about to bother with all that on a 16+ y/o truck. the areostar drum upgrade will do for me. i'll know more once i take the trailer somewhere, lately its just been back and forth to work, 4 miles each way with only a mile and a half outside of town at highway speeds. one odd thing, when i first got my truck and i needed to do rear brake service, i had to bust the drums to get them off, they were rust-seized to the axle flange. those drums did have some fins around them similar to what the areostar drums have. thay werent the same drums i have now, but they were better than what i replaced them with. im not sure if there are 2 different specs of areostar drums or if certian rangers may have came with finned drums factory. (mine is a 5040 gvwr) i always use a bit of anti-seize between the drum and where it mates to the axle flange now. i dont think i could bust these new ones apart. the autozone part # for the areostar drum i got is 8994. i asked for "areostar drums, '93 2wd 4.0"
