Am I the only one who thinks tat it is a horrible decision to drop the crown vic. for a front-drive heap of crap. The crown vic.'s been built on the same platform for 30 years for a reason....It works!

I was in Attica Kansas several years ago when they had a Renault Dauphine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYbiaCRwwAUfor a cop car, (BTW 13.8 CID). The big red light on top looked like it was 1/2 the size of the car. The one and only city policeman was maybe 6' 6" and 300#. Watching him get into and out of the car was more like putting it on and taking it off.

When I went to college in Manhattan Kansas the city cops had several Dodge slant sixes. Any car in town could run off and hide from them. People were rumored to have outrun them on foot. The city also had a 1958 Studebaker Larkhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studebaker_Lark. Studebaker bought Packard when they went out of business and the Lark had a 400 CID Packard V/8 in it. Any time the cops needed to chase anyone, they would radio for the Lark to do it. They had to drive it in LoRange, because the brakes were hopeless and totally unable to deal with the added weight of the engine.

Unibody is fine for cars, been used for decades. Not so much for trucks.

Actually, it's fine for both. It's still a frame but I noticed many here don't understand it and seem afraid of it.

Unibody is a short term for unit-body construction, and it is indeed very different from a ladder frame construction in that it relies on the car's fixed body structures (floor pan connected to a-pillars, b pillars,etc.) for support. Then it has a subframe, which is like a tiny little frame section to which the front end components are connected to. Some cars also have a rear subframe for suspension, etc. The fact unit body cars rely on their entire structure for strength is clearly visible if you cut the roof off of one. For example, If you hack the roof off a caravan and than go over some rutted fields and rough terrain, It will slowly bend into a v. I personally prefer a vehicle which does not have to rely on its body for strength. Also, a standard ladder frame is much easier to straighten after a crash.

Unibody is VERY strong. Essentially on modern unibody construction you have a cage with some body panels attached. Of course if you cut it then it becomes weak. If the put 1 cross-slice in a ladder frame the whole vehicle will collapse from even on road use. That hardly seems relevant though. As far as crash damage. I am more concerned with me in a crash. The vehicles job is to protect me. Not allow it's frame to send the impact to my seat.

Never said it was weak, just that I prefer BOF, that's all. Also, Ive seen crashes where unibody vehicles twisted like pretzels with the driver being crushed to bits, so like a cage.....no.
