2.9 engine miss?

I am just running out of things to check.....

Damn it has to be the exhaust sounds like everything under the hood is new maybe get it good and hot then pour some water down the throttle body at about 3000 rpm at a rate that the rpm starts to drop for a little bit then rev it up and see if that blows some of the carbon out of it and even if it is only 200,000 miles your due at least a new cat take it to a muffler shop they should be able to tell you for free what all it needs. does the exhaust smell like the cat is working. your close I`m sure of it

When I had it mistimed, There was quite a bit of water coming from the tailpipe. Black water. Lots of carbon in it. As soon as I timed it correctly the water stopped. Water is one of the cat by products? Wondering if it is more clogged muffler than it is cats. Doesn't smell weird now. Before it smelled rich.

yea the water is a old trick to clean the cylinder heads and valves the steam disolves the carbon maybe it will clear out the muffeler and cat do it a couple of times make sure the system is good and hot and pour it down the carb till it starts to studder at a medium rpm then goose it and use the pressure to hopefully open the obstruction

no the 86 has two small cats one after the other stock. it also does not have a carb as it is the 2.9. not bein mean just sayin.

if i was dunna check the cats i would just unbolt them. 3 bolts on the flange right before the cats.

your vacuum readings are pretty much like a new motor it runs good at idle and medium speeds it definately is pointing to too much back pressure get it breathing good it should fly thru any emissions station

It is a dual cat, single exhaust. I have an extra set of cats in the garage. They look great, came off of the same BII that I got the engine, transmission and t-case. I may just replace the muffler and tailpipe and throw the other cats in and see what happens. Can't hurt.....

Those bolts are a bitch. At least the back one. I really am thinking it is best to do it though.

Guess if they give me too much trouble I could just carefully cut them off and replace the bolts.

Yea I meant throttle body and my cat is welded if you can unbolt them thats the ticket I doubt the muffler is plugged pull the cats and shake them it should be obvious if they are bad I believe i saw some on ebay for a decent price

all ready got 'em. Muffler was dripping water when it was running bad. May as well just replace it. Tailpipe has seen better days as well. I think I will start putting the PB blaster on the bolts everynight, get through this next round of rain and make it my weekend project.

Hell, I could probably sell the old cats to a scrap yard for what the muffler and tailpipe will cost.

dam you got it all right there if the pipes arent leaking dont mess with them if it aint broke dont fix it bolts are cheap do you have the muffler too
