89 Linked Ranger Build (LOTS of pics)

I'm pretty new to this forum, just looking for cool ideas and such, but this is his build, if you have an opinion pm it to him, no need for us to have to read an online fight when we're just trying to look at an interesting build.

I didn't read every post but it looks really good, nice work.

I am interested in how you guys got the numbers together on the link setup ?

Did you wing it, do you have a number cruncher or maybe you do this for a living ?

Again it looks good,

Thanks!!

We started off by looking up 4 link setups and whatnot... Tried to learn the basics... Then, we just started playing around with link lengths and mounting points, and but them into a number cruncher as we designed it, until we were happy with the numbers. Then we starting fabbing up parts!!

The number cruncher was downloaded from a link I found on Pirate4x4.

And yes, hopefully someday I am doing this stuff for a living, since I'm in the process of of getting my Mechanical Engineering degree, and my brother is taking Welding and Fabrication. But for now, this is just a hobby!

ltr and luck on your new profession.

Tonight, my brother traded a LP Ford D60 needing a bunch of parts, for a Dodge D60 with mint brakes and hubs and whatnot. This will be used for his 609 build!!!! Here it is:

Warn hubs, good rotors, and good calipers.

The diff sat for who knows how long without a diff cover, so the internals are rusty, but that's alright. The center section isn't needed for this build.

We'll drag a 9" into the shop tomorrow and start planning the build. More pics to come soon!

Love the build and the truck i want to swap the same axles under my truck but i dsont needalot of flex so i was gunna go leaf springs like u in the beggining great build lookin forward to seeing the front suspension it would be awesome to see the front flex 2 feet to.

Saw this truck in Petersons 4wheel and offroad in the whoops section I reconized the rear axle and knew it was yours.

:nopityA:

Ok....first off, merry christmas.

secondly, you shoud probably get off your high horse with that engineering degree that means jack shit and listen to some people like JohnnyU and others like myself who have learned from experience. (some of us the hard way). Also take your balls out of your hand bag and dont be a cry baby claiming personal attacks, obviously you're somewhat smart, so you should realize it has nothing to do with you personally, its the fabrication of your build.....

I, nor anybody else here has any personal problem with YOU.

all of that aside, you're argument about the trac bar mount is over burdened with fallecies. It doesnt matter if you use 1/4 or 3/8... I seen the picture of your welder... trust me... its not penetrating the 3/8 any better than the 1/4.
Your new mount is neither stronger, nor improved by any significant value.... it is heavier though...:icon_thumby:

Secondly, the picture of Nobody's old truck is either missing, or you cannot see that he ran a brace from the trac-bar mount, to the engine x-member, although even without that brace, the way it is mounted, spec wise... does distribute the load different and better than your mount.

moving on to greener pastures.... the city called, they want their stop sign post back.... come on man, that shit is janky. Did you really butt-weld that 90* without any sort of gusseting? You sir, are braver than I.

I am however impressed with your little design you made in the rear axle truss window thingy... no bullshit.... I'm serious, that is pretty good.

I will stop here for now unless you would like to continue our discussion.
Feel free to find pictures and posts about my truck, you will not find much to give me a hard time about, and if you do.. thats ok, I wheel harder than you anyways.... even in your dreams.

Happy Kwanzaa.

This thread kills me. First off, props for doing the work and building what you want. Doing the work is how you learn. The problem is, you're not learning. A previous design failed and you built a similar part, just with thicker material.

The reason there's so much discussion on trac bars is because its a CRUTIAL component of your suspension. Why be so hard headed, take what these guys say with an open mind and you may be able to learn something.

Thicker isn't always better. I guess I'd better post my setup so you can judge my credibility.

Better wait till you get through some 3-400 level ME courses before claiming to be an ME major. Taking a few Gen Ed courses and falsely argueing Strength of Materials concepts makes us look bad :thefinger:

I think it's more credible to have at least a few years of practical experience under your belt with that goofy ME degree.:thefinger:

I'm not an ME major, I'm the real thing. :icon_thumby:

EDIT: That looks an awful lot like a Chevy 60, most Dodge axles had different style hubs. What's the BOM on the axle?

Yup.... We were pretty excited.

Ok....first off, merry christmas.
Merry Christmas to you too. But, as for the rest of your reply.... I'm not going to bother replying too much, since it's wasting my time. I believe I've said it numerous times now, it was a temporary quick fix, out in the bush. The engine is out of the truck now, and something new is being put in there, as well as a new front suspension. The least of our worries is that front trac bar mount.

I worked for the city last summer, and I've actually put up signs, and I've NEVER seen any sort of signs made of the material we used on the truck. Not even close. So I am very confused, but oh well.

How would you know if you wheel harder than me? I don't post any of my stuff on this forum, cause I wheel a '79 F150. This is my brothers Ranger, and he wheels it pretty hard, considering it's far from done, and considering we are both students and can't afford expensive equipment and fixing our junk all the time. I'll bet he rides his sled a lot harder than you!!!!! But, that's completely beyond the point, that has nothing to do with ANYTHING!!! Exactly the same way that how you THINK you wheel harder than us.... It has nothing to do with this thread!!

We learned a lot.... The first one failed, under some medium abuse. We built a new one, and it has held up great to all the rest of the abuse throughout the summer (which was harder wheeling than the beginning of the season when the first one failed). And now, whether you think it's too weak or not, it does not matter, cause the truck will not be ran with that front axle anymore.

We saw it come out of a Dodge.... But it's possible that it's a Chevy. Or it has Chevy parts on it? Who knows?! I can grab the BOM off it later.

As for the attacks towards me and getting my mechanical engineering degree... Someone asked what I do for a living, and I told him that I am a student and what I am taking in school. That's as far as I went. So calm down you guys!!! I don't even have my degree yet (and I'm in no rush either).

when i read the post about the upside down ranger in 4WOR i instantly remebered the picture and ran to the bathroom to grab the mag... sure as shit, that green axle truss was staring me right in the eye, like some kind of radioactive/nuclear pickle! haha thats awesome.

.

so what are the plans for the front? i like the work ya'll have done work with what youve got thats how i do

Hahaha!!! Nice!

All sorts of ideas are floating around in my brothers head. At first he was thinking 302, and now he's thinking 4bt. As for front suspension, the first plan was an improved radius arm setup, and now maybe linking the front, if he goes full-hydro. So, to be honest, I don't know for sure exactly where he will go with the build.

i vote links and the 4bt would be nasty but heavy dont yea think?
