1992 4cyl manual trans noise

I looked on ALLDATA at work and theres a few Technical service bulletins on those noises. It said they sound like marbles rolling around in a can. I forget what it said the noise actually was, but not to worry about it and it causes no damage. Mine does the same thing

OK well the tranny finally came out and upon inspection it was none of the above:annoyed: Fourth gear is gone... The countershaft and the main shaft and the gears themselves are galled beyond repair which is so weird because 4th was the only gear that it shifted into and out of smoothly and didn't make any noise in at all but a visual inspection is the proof. I need a new one:( I put up a thread in the wanteds and asked around a few months ago and kinda let it go because money is so tight and I'm sorry for that but now I don't have a choice:sad: I gotta find a Mazda M5OD-R1 quick and $500 for a junkyard tranny is redamneddiculous. So 1. will a M5OD from say a 2.9 bolt up to a 2.3 or are they different? or will any? 2. Does anybody know where I can find one nearby for cheap? I'm about an hour from asheville, NC and I can't afford to drive more than a couple hours out so any further and it'll have to be shipped. Any help is greatly appreciated:icon_cheers:

1. You need a 2.3 or 2.5 tranny
2. Not sure what side of you Ashville you are on, but in Raleigh there is a LKQ u-pull-it that *should* be cheaper than a traditional salvage place. You might give them a call to see what they charge. I've been out of Raleigh for a year and a half now but they usually had a small to medium selection of Gen 2 Rangers. http://www.lkqcorp.com/location/sites.asp?L=21

You might also check Raleigh's Craigs List and see if anyone is offering one up, or else post a wanted ad on. Their Car and Truck section gets quite a bit of usage.

ok thought so for the different engines but was hopeful. I'm west of asheville. Thanks for the info I'll be looking that up now:icon_thumby:

Finally pulled the trans out. Couldn't find one locally but I got a replacement from a TRS member:icon_thumby: Good to go! 4th was trashed and the rest were on the way from a low fluid level at some point in it's life:annoyed: They just filled it back up and kept driving it i guess. The weird part was 4th was the only gear that shifted nicely and didn't make noise:icon_confused: anywho now it shifts like a champ and is nice and quiet freeing up the atmosphere so I can perform NVH testing as I drive to and from work with all the other little noises associated with driving with lil' red.

Thanks for all the advice guys!
