is using a clevis for recovery a good idea?

just wondering if a screw pin clevis would be safe to use to hook my strap(no hooks just eyelets) to my truck(tow hooks are closed "D" style). i have seen many people with them on their trucks but that doesnt nessacerly mean it is safe. Also are they all generally the same, i have seen them online and know that there are different load rattings, but is there some desigend for pulling and some for lifting or does that not matter. thanks.

As long as it is of sufficient strength. You want to make note of the working load limit (WLL). Mine are all 3/4", 7/8" and 1". They are 6.5, 8.5, and 10 ton WLL respectively.

and yes they are good for recovery provided you aren't using cheap mild steel ones made in China or India and purchased from tractor supply.

You want ones made in USA, Germany or Japan and marked "Forged Alloy Steel"

I recommending doing yor recovery hardware shopping at a company

I've never seen Chinese made Clevises, they are all made in India in our farm stores.

In addition to all the good recovery stuff, they've plenty of other cool stuff in there, including more lights & lightbars than you can shake a stick at. My dad gets the catalog (actually have one sitting on the desk right now) and is very happy wither their prices and service.

Once aack around 1990 I was putting marker lights on my service vehicle
as I needed to get it inspected and the old lights were shot, and well
ahead of time I ordered the ones I needed in both Yellow and Red

Opening the package I discovered to my horror that they were ALL Red
(no yellow lamps at all) after a two sentance explanation of the situation
they FedEx shipped the correct ones to me.

The best customer service I've received from companies AW-Direct is in the top three.
they are "tied" with Pagesus Auto Racing supplies, but they are both beaten by Dillon Precision.

just be careful where you have them ive seen ppl mount them on chevy trucks and have seen them get ripped off cause they took off the stock tow hooks and those munts are only use for towing on a tow truck not. be sure to get a good tow strap try to get one that is double your trucks stock curb weight for example my truck weights a little over 5000 pounds and my strap is rated at 10,000 pounds and take good care of them too i wash mine about every 2 or 3 months with laundry soap and a good brush. if you use a chain or cable try to keep a good saddle blanket to drap over them so if they snap in half it wont be as bad when they snap it will slow them down a bit. been there done that dont want to go there again. be care and have fun! and always use common sense when pullin people or when people have to pull you

We use them to recover MRAPs in Iraq. Should be able to handle a Ranger no matter how buried! Just make sure the Work Load Limit is sufficient.

I've got 2 for each of my straps, and the funny hooks that A-W direct carries that lets you hook up on a vehicle that only has the factory holes/slots in the frame. The trouble with these though, is that you better make DAMN sure to use them in the correct spot, or you can seriously FUBAR a car when they pull out of the frame.
