how to start off my collection of tools/hardware

You've gotten great advice so far, except nobody has mentioned-

beer!

Just kidding; the only thing that I can add to what the others are telling you, is that a good shop manual is well worth the expense.

Chiltons, Haynes are better than nothing, but patience can get you the real Ford factory shop manuals off eBay for a very reasonable cost.

rear axle (diff cover, ring gear bolts, and RABS sensor bolt, along with the brake backing plate bolts), wheel studs, 2.3 starter power wire (on a metric engine having a single bolt with a 3/8" head makes sense...).

That's all I can come up with right now, but at least ford liked to use the same size for nearly everything, most metric fasteners have 13mm heads which work with 1/2" tools, wish they would have made the 18mm stuff 19mm so that 3/4" tools would work on them...

Another thing to get: a good flashlight or a headlamp used for hiking. The headlap would be a better choice because it's hands-free.

I don't know about YOUR Axle, but my 8.8" axle has metric cover bolts.

Or atleast The english 5/16" tap I tried to use to chase the
threads wouldn't fit... 8x1.25 with 13mm heads...

The Ring gear bolts true. The diff carrier bearing cap bolts as well.

the Rabs sensor bolt? No.

Ready?

1) Radius arm to beam bolts 3/4-10 thread with 1-1/8" heads

2) Radius arm bushing nuts 3/4-10 thread also 1-1/8"

3) Coil spring retaining stud (and nut) 5/8-11 thread head
size is either 1-1/8" or 15/16"

4) FRONT drive shaft U-joint to diff flange 1/4-28 thread T-30 head
(the 7/16" head isn't useable because the strap is too close)

5) FRONT drive shaft bolt to t-case flange (13-54) 5/16-24 thread
5/16 12-point (8mm wrenches work)

6) Manual T-case shifter pivot Bolt 9/16-12 thread 1-1/8" head

7) Manual T-case shifter gate adjustment lock screw
3/8-16 thread 9/16 head.

8) IF your truck is 1994 or earlier the VSS or speedometer drive gear is retained in the trans (2wd) or T-case (4x4) by a 1/4-20 screw with
a 7/16" head.

9) Brake Backing plate retaining screws 3/8-24(fine) with 9/16" head
and nut

10) Supercabs with TWO PIECE rear driveshaft the U-joint strap bolts
are 1/4"-28 thread

11) Rear wheel Cylinder bolts vary 1/4-20, 5/16-18 or metric
(usually 8mm) depending on manufacturer.

12) 1983-97 to hold the steering box to the frame, the
bolts are 7/16-14 thread with 5/8" heads

13) On Supercabs the rear window is retained with nuts that
most people think are 9mm, they are not, they are really 11/32"
as that is the standard size nut for the 8-32 threaded studs
they thread onto.

14) on EARLY Gen1 Rangers the 13-50 T-case is mounted with
3/8-16 thread english bolts, but by '85 or '86 Dana switched to
10x1.5 Metric bolts.

Yes, the studs on the starter solenoid are 5/16-18 and use
an oversized 9/16" nut, but that's largely because ford hasn't
changed that part materially since before most forum members
were born.

I don't think I missed any, but I could be wrong...

ask for gift cards to sears and go buy this set. CLICK ME thats a great set for to start collecting tools. if you would buy that set it would be way over 500 dollars. so ask for gift cards then pay for the rest yourself. this a good set.

Ok,, let's see if you can tell me exactly what machine screw fasteners
on your 1987 supercab are English...
Betcha you can't...

I'll give you a hint, there are TEN locations on a Ranger that
usually have english fasteners. Most are impractical or pointless
to change.

Anyone wanna guess where?

Lug nuts(maybe), license plate screws, tail-lamp screws(1st gen), trim screws.... ugh I give up on the rest(the fact that 13mm and 1/2" are nearly the same!..which brings up another point, I use the sockets that FITS)

dang, well I just swapped my rear axles and the diff cover bolts an such fit a 1/2" wrench better than a 13mm which generally means they are 1/2"... oh well
