Well for piece of mind... the recall's free dude Of course I didn't know about it before it was done and none of my brake fluid lit on fire lol

03 ranger

Hi,

I have an 03 ranger and a few questions :


1) Does anyone know if all 2003 rangers will be included or only up to a certain VIN? I read somewhere it was to include the last 'batch' of rangers to use the switch.

2) Does the dealer change the switch and add the fuse link, or simply add the fuse link?

3) Finally, is there anything we can read off of the switch to know if it's a bad model? From what I've read it sounds like it would be easy to unscrew the old switch and screw in a new one....

The dealer adds a fused link into the harness, go to your dealer and they can run the VIN and possibly provide you with the switch or make and appointment to get it done if it needs it.

The joys of having a Ford Tech on the site. I just learned how to use the Ford Catalogue now at the dealer so I can look up prices on stuff for my truck I like working at the dealer even if I'm not turing wrenches.

When they did the recall on the F-150's unless the switch was already leaking you got the fuse.

For reasons unknown to me, I got a new switch even though mine wasn't bad... really I would rather have the fuse.

Kinda funny back in '67 they had a pressure switch for the brakelights on my dad's IH pickup... looks original.

I put my VIN in this website:

http://www.ford.com/owner-services/customer-support/recall-information

and it said there were no recalls . But, not being sure the website was up to date, I put in some VINs for 2003 rangers I found on autotrader.com (example 1FTZR45E73PA15924) and some showed the 09S09 recall and some did not.

Would you think this means I'm clear, or does it take a while for the site to get _all_ the VINs in? (I would assume they enter ranges and not individual VINs)...

Over the tiny sample I did, it looked like VINs with the serial #s around 30000+ were mostly clear. My VINs last digits are .....PA72665 and was bought in august.

I like the thought of not having the TI switch in there...

I accept: The latest voluntary action pushes Ford's total recall due to faulty switches to 14.3 million registered vehicles over 10 years, capping the company's largest cumulative recall in history involving a single problem.
The recall covers 1.1 million Ford Windstar minivans that had a small risk of fire due to internal leaking from the switches. Ford said in a letter to federal regulators that it found a small number of reported fires linked to the problem during an internal investigation that began last year, but did not specify how many.

My 1994 F150 caught on fire due to the faulty switch while returning home from a fishing trip a few years back. This is where it gets funny, the fire started because of the faulty switch and melted the master cylinder reservoir. The brake fluid poured out, put out the fire and then the melted plastic hardened and sealed the reservoir. I was able to drive home with brakes, no problem. When I took the truck to the local Ford dealer the following week the mechanics just laughed and scratched their heads, they couldn't believe the truck never burned to the ground. Ironically, three weeks later I received the recall from Ford for the faulty switch. Haha

Just got my recall card in the mail.

Strange though, to my knowledge my truck doesn't have cruise control.


Edit: Even stranger, I tried putting my vin into the recall website and it says it's not valid. I'm driving a ghost truck with phantom cruise control. I wonder if it knows Halloween already passed.
