Hey guys, if/ when the day ever comes that my 2.8 dies I have the intention of dropping a 302 with a np435 4speed and 203/205 doubler into my ranger, is there anyone around that has done it or know of any reasons not to try it?

And oh yea on a side note im seriously considering doing a 3 link set up on my 9 inch this winter using the stock ford style radius arms and coil buckets.

the main reason for wanting to 3 link it is so I can cut the rear over hang off the bed.

And sorry in advance if this is in the wrong section, didnt know where else to put it

I can think of a couple right off, as I am building something along those lines currently.
1) With or without body lift? It is extremely easy to do this with a b/l. I have been through about 9 kinds of hell so far, because I chose to go without a b/l.
2) What is your wheelbase? This is important because of packaging issues: I am using a Supercab, so everything mostly fits under the cab, and I have room for BOTH driveshafts. A reg. cab/shortbed is most likely not LONG enough to be able to contain a workable and realistic rear driveshaft length, esp. on a flexible rear like what you are wanting to do.
Now, I am building a bit different than you, but the same logic applies, if you stop and think about it.

I am running 302/NP435/BW1356/Dana 24 Xcase.

ahhhhh yea mine is a reg cab short bed and the rear drive shaft has def been a concern and yea it has a 2 inch body lift.

Are there any better doubler set ups or even a good affordable transfer case with a super low low range that would bolt to a 435?
I am certain I can do a 435/205 without the doubler cause my buddy has this setup in a wrangler with basically no rear driveshaft, all he has is a u joint a slip joint and a u joint

also does anyone know of something in the neighborhood of a 4 to 1 low range kit available for a ford 205?

mmm and just for comparison can anyone tell me what low range in a transfer case out of a 88 bronco ll would be? this thing crawls like a beast now!!

and triumph unless im missing something that kit only works for a gm transfer case

That would be in the Tech Library:

I just grabbed the first link that came up on Google, so it could have been (didn't really read it).

You can get a New Process 208, with a fixed yoke (out of a Bronco), and get a 2.73 low range, which beats the NP 205s' 1.96 low. (Ugh, why did they even bother with that for a low range?) Those were available as a married setup, as were the F-series. I name the Bronco specifically BECAUSE of the fixed yoke.

205 is still a better choice over the 208 because its got a stronger case and it can be twin sticked, the 208 cannot.

yea thats my main reason for wanting to go with the 205 is the strenght nm, is there anyway to do a 205/208 doubler? im liking not having this truck break all the time and i want that to continue after i do the motor/trans swap

i dont see why not.... whats the length of a 203/205

ok so after tonights wheeling it seems its time to get more serious about gathering parts for my motor/trans/transfer swap

Mudhound what is involved in doing this set up WITHOUT a body lift? raising the shifter tunnel? my body is moving all over the place and im thinking about lifting the entire body off to get it out of the way, installing the motor, trans, and transfer (hopefully with a doubler) and then setting the body back on again after its all done.

What would be a fair price to pay for the doubler kit? or does anyone know of a way to do it using factory parts or?

I have a buddy with a doubler kit that he bought for his buggy and now says he doesnt think he is gonna use it and im trying to talk him out of it.

and NM I dont know the total length of the combo but (someone correct me if im wrong) I THINK the doubler bolts directly to the back of the 435 to take the place of the original trans to transfer adapter so the overall length should not change much at all

Okay. I would HIGHLY suggest that you get the body to quit moving everywhere, first things first. This is going to lead to ALOT of potential problems, like binding shifters, excessive body scrub, etc...
Now, for an idea of what you are getting into, go look at my buildthread "The Mudhound under the knife.", for a quick idea. I have ALOT more pix of the install, including some close-ups of the lack of clearance in some key places. When you go to stuff this thing in, be forewarned that you are going to be hanging the weight off of the front of the motor.

You will need the cab installed so that you have a reference point for the rear of your motor. If you feel confident in your measureing abilities, then you could go ahead and mark the frame for your reference point, just make damn sure that you are right. If your tranny/Xcase has an adapter, then, NO, you cannot just bolt the doubler on. This only works on a direct marry set-up. The 203/208 "can" be done, but it will be about as long as the 203/205.
