Ive got an 87 ranger, and will be putting in a new 93 explorer Radiator. On the new radiator, it has an optional transmission cooler, is there a way i could hook this up? or is it not possible/not needed?

My 89 came from the factory with an external cooler mounted against the front of the radiator plus the lines also ran through the built- in cooler in the radiator lower tank.

You need all the cooling you can get with a 2.9L engine and a A4LD trans since the one hates heat and the other creates it. When I switched to stick my Ranger went from overheating problems to running cool without any other mods.

Use the cooler!Your trans will love you for it.

Ill take a look down there, i just dont see any place to hook it up to

You do have an automatic trans....right?

as far as i know, you should already have an in-trans cooler for your transmission. hooking it up to the 4.0 radiator should be no problem. it wouldnt be a bad idea to get another, external cooler as well (plumbed before the in-radiator cooler).

exbass94: nope, 4 speed + overdrive

Wicked_Sludge: Is it just a matter of unplugging a hose or two from the right spot? I am researching this right now, and ill be putting it in on sunday, so we'll see what happens

Manual transmission = no cooler, as there is not a pump to push the oil through the system.

i thought he had an auto too. in that case no, its not possible to hook a cooler up to a standard transmission...nor is it needed as manual transmissions dont produce the heat an auto does.

that internal trans. cooler would make a handy power steering cooler though, something ford neglected on our generation of trucks....
