2.9L... looking to increase performance and aggressive sound

i mean is there a noticeable difference with a true dual exhaust?

probably more noise (which i don't mind if it's a nice noise through like a super 44 or something of the sort), but how does it affect preformance?

if you carefully size the pipe, a true dual will not hurt performance. it will sound somewhat louder. but not a bad louder.

i cut my muffler off, just ran it straight out of the cats and it sounds good and isnt too loud. left like 2 ft of pipe after the cat cut it after the last hanger before the muffler.

so choosing 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 after the new cat, and then 2 1/2 y pipe to 2 1/2 exit(s) will be just fine? and may increase hp by a few, possibly mpg (i get about 14mpg now)

dude for the last time, heres how i would do it. new cat-2 1/4 pipe-muffler you choose-2 1/4 split-2 1/4 pipes over the axle-either 2 1/4 pipes behind each tire or straight out the back. i would NOT DO 2 1/2 PIPE. 2 1/2 is way overkill and you will lose some economy. and dont expect any mpg gains. 1-2 max. now if you choose to do so, heres your other option.

new cat-2 1/4 pipe-muffler- 2 1/4 pipe. 2 1/4 tail pipe to stock location

which ever you choose, but stay with the 2 1/4 pipe

i think a dual exhaust tip would look stupid coming out of the side of a truck... how hard is it to get a true dual exhaust and get exhaust tip coming out from each side?

It sucks you're not closer, I would just give you my old 2.9L exhaust system. It's a Dynomax super turbo - 2.5" in / 2 x 2.25" out fake duals. It's the entire cat back, it was all welded together, but I sawzalled into 3 pieces. You can't have true duals and have an optimal running system because the 2.9L only has one oxygen sensor. Though the piping is probably a bit big, I had modded my engine with some internal mods.

i assume i'm going to be replacing all of the piping underneath? does the exhaust piping start at the engine?
i could just do 2.5" like you said, is 3" worth it? i mean i've only got a 2.9L... i am not putting out that much exhaust.

You can get away with just replacing the cat and muffler, while retaining the piping that's already there. I think once you see how much mandrel bent pieces are, you may steer away from replacing all of the pipe. Cat shouldn't need replaced unless it's clogged. Full 2.5" is too big IMO. 2.25" should be about perfect. 3" is just plain too much.

Mufflers generally only change sound, you won't get any noticeable performance increase.

darn, yeah that wouldn't be too bad... did you like the 2.9L exhaust you had?
i might try what you did with 2 1/4 if you liked it.

i just think that fake dual exhausts are so stupid lol... like in the winter when you see exhaust only coming out of one side... it just looks so dumb. i mean if i'm going to lose performance, or maybe not lose from the original but not have as much as a single, then i will just go with a single in the stock location.

alright on keeping the stock pipe, how can i tell if it needs replaced? obviously if it is rusted through or something, but what if there are small cracks that I can't see or something?

Rust holes are the big thing, I don't think you'll find any cracks except in the manifolds, unless the pipe was rusting though from the inside. You'll just have to crawl under there and take a peek at what you're working with.

alright, well i will look around for a new cat and muffler.
i know you said i don't really have to replace the cat, but i'm just going to. just to avoid problems in the long run. my whole idea w/ this truck is to slowly start replacing everything so that it stays alive.

going to stick with stock pipe.

not looking to spend more than $200.
which i think is reasonable for two parts.
i think i'll just stick with a single exhaust, in the stock location. maybe get a nice chrome tip on there. i saw one somewhere, can't remember, that had an LED tip... would be funny lookin lol... but considering it, it might be too cheesy.

If you don't have to worry about emissions in your area cut out the Cat, It will flow much better. And for my 2.8 I used a Cherry bomb Turbo Muffler, got it from a local Auto parts store I believe and I really like the sound for my small v6. Just my 2 cents

does not having the cat change the sound? i assume it does... i want to keep the cat anyway, as cheesy as it sounds, i do want further away generations to live on this earth lol.

Haha I hear ya, It would a little, the cat disrupts the flow but it does help keep the pollution down...so whichever way you want to go. I don't think it would make that big a difference though. I had to have the cat on mine for emissions...Gwinnett County. But after this year I can take it off!!

Yea I saw that and saw your posts, I say go for it! For that kind of money you can't go wrong, I've never had any experience with Dynomax but it looks like a great deal!

texted a family friend to see if he would have time to help me out (he has heavy duty jacks, a garage, and what not)

gonna wait for him to text back, and then order after if he confirms.



replacing gasket valve covers, and hopefully spark plugs (and wires?), maybe oil change on friday as well.

We put my entire exhaust in with my truck sitting in the driveway, If you have to access to a welder you will be fine. Granted my dad knows how to weld a little so if your friend can help you out when it comes, Congrats on the new exhaust!


Spark plugs and wires aren't difficult...if I can do it anybody can!
