On the Explorer, I want to say '95 or '98 was the first year for the SOHC. There were a few years there that Ford offered BOTH 4.0's in the Explorer.

Nope, you're mistaken - SOHC was not available in the Ranger series trucks until 2001 - availability in the Explorer lineup started in 1997 though. Bird
