5 speed transmission in my '00 3.0 Ranger felt weird, I could hear some hear noise so I decided to change out the fluid. What came out was not automatic tranny fluid as these are supposed to have but what looked like gear oil. Anyway, the gear oil was black so I went ahead and put in Mercon auto fluid in. Seemed to be a bit quieter the first week, now it seems to be whining a little and sometimes shifting into gear is a bit hard. Oh yeah, the magnetic drain plug had a substantial amount of metal filings on it. Question is: did I do wrong by putting Mercon fluid in place of the gear oil? Thanks

yeah ....... mixing transmission fluid with gear oil turns it into glue. you need to change it again........ run it for a week and change it again......and do it a 3rd time........

Ya when I had bought my truck it had the Mitsubishi trans in it (which take gear oil). The previous owner had filled it to the top with ATF, that after the fluid got warm and pressurized a little bit it shot fluid out of the top of the trans into the cab of the truck. Just about made me crap myself. I just drained the fluid and replaced it with gear oil. That Trans was junk i replaced it with the M50D...

M5OD-R1's take ATF. Did the old fluid SMELL like Gear oil?? ATF and gear oil have different smells. Reason I ask, is that when I drained my ATF from the Tcase, the fluid was black...but it still smelled like ATF.

I would hope that a person would be able to tell the difference between the consistency of gear oil vs atf.

ATF pours like water, gear oil does not.
