92 ranger 4cyl the other day my power steering pump seized up on me and took the belt with it i didnt have the money to replace the whole unit so instead i bought a new shorter belt so i could bypass the power steering pump untill i can get it fixed so i was wondering if this is going to cause any extra stress on the steering components and if so what kind also will i get better gas milage i know its probably not safe to be driving it with out power steering but it doesnt realy bother me yea the wheel is a little harder to turn but i know i can keep it on the road

There are a few guys that I race with that run a power steering system without the pump, makes it a little harder to steer, but doesn't hurt anything.Kind of tough around parking lots and such but it will give you good upper body strenght

You know my buddy has a 96' ranger xl that came from the factory without powersteering and his little 2.3 hauls ass. it has 31 inch tires on it too.

I ran mine without powersteering for about 3 months. Then the rag joint wore out so bad the truck was scary to drive, it wandered so much. But, I have 35's. Just watch for play in your steering shaft (mainly the rag joint) and you'll be fine.

i do notice it does have a lil more power i dont have to downshift going uphill as soon as i did with the pump and i have saved about $5 in gas this week compared to last week and i payed 18cents more this week go figure i think im just going to leave it off then since nobody here has had any major problems without one thanks for the input

I would also say if you like the little bit of extra power, take the power box and components off and put on a manual box, ebay once in awhile has them for $50-$75.As stated you will wear out the rag joint quicker.

I know this thread is OLD, but this JUST happened to me and Im in a TIGHT situation right now and would like to know what belt you used? OR how to measured it to choose what belt to get. Did you use a string and wrap it around all the pulleys and measured it that way? I need help ASAP! Im riding my 91 CBR600 rain or not with stretched chain and old sprockets till I get truck back on the road. Kinda scary riding the bike due to the sound resonating from the chain and sprockets. GOTTA make it to work though! Going on my second week and cant be late again. Thanks in advance! -Joseph

Maybe tell the counter guy you need a belt for your truck that has manual steering [little white lie].

Richard

slightly different setup most likely. best bet is take a piece of 1/4" rope (or whatever small rope you have around and wrap it around the needed pulleys, take that length to the parts store and they will find you the belt...

Thanks for the quick responses!. You helped confirm my assumption. I called AdvanceAuto and they didnt have the diagrams of the w/and w/out power steering so i must measure as i thought and stated above. Hopefully ill have the Ranger up n running tomorrow morning. A little more power and better mpg should result in this as well. -Joseph

Go to Wal-Mart and buy you some Creatine Powder mix too. Power Steering is useless when you have biceps like Ahnuld.
