serious loss of power

Has anybody have any idea what to do next? :dunno:

I have a '89 Ford Ranger 4x4 2.3L 4 Cylinder and the engine has almost completely lost power. The fastest the truck will go is around 15mph. Although it still does it before, it's worse when the engine warms up. It's like the engine is starving for fuel, air, etc. I have checked the fuel lines, pressure, leaking, fuel pump, fuel filter and the air intake. Nothing, the engine just bogs down and stops putting out power.

After doing all that, to no avail, we pulled the computer codes, which say that it's not detecting the EGR valve opening. So then we checked the EGR and the pipe coming off it for clogging and checked the EGR to make sure it was working right, and I'm sure it is because if you connect a hose to the vacuum line and suck, the engine stalls. Then we checked the vacuum on the EGR and there is none and it does not change when throttled.

Does anybody know what sends the signal for the EGR vacuum? We checked the Electronic Vacuum Regulator I believe it is; it has two vacuum plugs and an electric plug, by switching it with another one and that made no difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a plugged cat. does the motor get hot when you try to run it? how did it all start? could try unhooking the pipe going to the EGR and see if that helps (this will give the exhaust a place to escape) If it's noticible better, it's probably an obstruction in the exhaust. does it sound different?

We disconnected the exhaust and the engine runs and sounds the same. So it didn't help. We also checked the compression.

so what kind of numbers did you get when you did a compression check?

Maybe time to take it to a real machanic. u got a supergay issue. Sorry cop gonna give me a TWI-Typing while intoxicated:icon_cheers:
 
Try using som sea-foam! :D i used that stuff and many of my engine troubles went away.
 
I'd say timing belt slipped a tooth or two...
 
a compression check should come up bad if the timing was off though. seeing those numbers from the compression check would be handy :D just an afterthought, but look under the hood while you manually throttle it up. if one of the rubber elbows on the intake was colapsing it might act something like that too.

I believe I just remedied a similar issue and from what I've concluded it was the air filter and/or MAF sensor (if you have one).

Total shot in the dark but sounds very similar to what was occuring before I cleaned both.

Also,I have a new fuel filter. fyi

What are these rubber elbows your talking about? Are they the ones connecting to the Air box or no?

Well we have narrowed it down to the MAP sensor but from what I know the MAF and MAP are basically the same. So that is what I plan on checking next, pray for me I may go nuts :shok: if this isn't the problem. Thanks for the help

ya in between the airbox and the throttle body. It's kind of a long shot, but as they get old they get weaker, i've seen some collapse before and when that happens they choke off the airway... no air = no good. i kinda doubt thats what your problem is, but it wouldn't hurt to give the intake system a once over.
