Help Finding the Source of Squeeling/Squeeking in Engine

:icon_idea:
Very carefuly grab a 3/8" hose and put one end tor your preffered ear and the other end close to each one of the pulleys so that You can pinpoint to where the noise comes from. Be EXTRA CAREFUL not to get the hose entagled or pulled by the serpentine belt or the radiator fan.
(damn... next thing i'll be telling how to do smoke signals).:shok:

Try removing the belt and run the engine. The squeal may not be all belt, it may be the syncro shaft. Are you also noticing any hickups/slight knocks under load? Signs of syncro problems, very common at 70,000 and up milage.

I've been having about the same problem as the Orig Poster. however, as mentioned above, I did notice some hiccups the when I was pulling around someone in the passing lane the other day.
I'm definately gonna check into the synchro, esp since I'm sitting at about 97k miles.
I've heard elsewhere on here its not a hard fix, just a ***** to get at.

Its not as hard as it looks, so long as you take off the plug and plastic sensor housing on top, shift the wiring to the side of the bolt, use a 10mm socket -> 2.5" extension -> swivel -> 5 or 6" extension then ratchet you'll be laughing. Once 10mm bolt is out a touch of persuasion may be in order.

Mine was making a similar noise awhile back, The bearings in my alt were going, changed it and was quit, now its back and it is now my a/c bearings going....I'll change that soon.

No need to the "special tool" the chilton manual mentions? Or for that matter to make sure the engine as at TDC?...

I think I read elsewhere on the forum I just need to make sure the new one goes in in the same position as the old one.

I replaced my idler pulley and belt tensioner today and it didn't quit...I did the ol screwdriver as a stethoscope trick and its' my F'ing alt'nator. POS. I'm gunna drive my truck til it quits:annoyed:

you can take your alternator off and have it tested. I thought it was my alternator too. My alt tested fine, but I had to put another new belt on mine after changing my pulleys to make the chirping sound stop. The belt was only a month old. I'm not a hundred percent this is your problem but, like I said I had almost identical problems your having.

I replaced the belt with a gatorback. Sorry forgot to mention that. If you take a long screwdriver you can use it as a stethoscope. Put it in ur ear and on the alt and I can hear the bearings goin bad inside it. I figured after spending 100 bucks on that chit i'm jus gunna drive it til it finally dies, I can't afford a new alt right now =/ The alt might test fine, but it's the bearings.

You can change the alternator bearings, and brushes at the same time, if you want. You can get a kit from your local alternator repair shop, if you have one, or you can order them from mail order. I know Whitney did have them.:)shady

From what i've been hearing alt's don't like mud...i'm gunna go to the JY some time this week and get an alt or two if I can for cheap and keep em in the truck with me. I don't wheel much but as it gets warmer i'm gunna start goin with my buddy. Damn lifted Zuki's:annoyed:

I had the same problem with mine. It tested fine but squealed like crazy. I tried regreasing the bearing but it was sealed so i forced a little in with a hypodermic needle. It helped for a bit.. I couldn't find any rebuild kits for my alternator at the local shops.
