hard to shift

Yikes, am I reading this right that in a manual 5 speed Mazda Tranmission in a '95 Ranger I should be using ATF? I was told gear oil when I redid the clutch!
Please let me know!

Yeah, ATF only in the M50D-R1... Sounds just like my M50D... It has a worn 1-2 synchro... I say just drive it like it is... Or you can rebuild it yourself, I plan on doing mine this summer... I already priced out a kit with all the synchros and it was like $500ish...

I would definitely consider rebuilding the transmission yourself or buying a good used junk yard one. These are extremely easy to replace bearings and synchros on. It's probably not worth the $1000 to get it rebuilt. You can get a lot of junk yard transmissions for that price.

How Bad is it?

Thanks so much for the responses and help. I have run the pickup with the gear oil in it since Monday, maybe 50-60 miles, mostly in town, or 2-3 miles on the highway at one time.
Is the damage done?
I would like to flush out the transmission and put the right tranny fluid in it. Good idea? If so, what would anyone suggest. Thanks so much!

Any Imediate suggestions

I have not drive my Ranger too far with the Gear oil in the transmission. Can I flush it somehow and put the right stuff in to be able to get as much life out of this transmission as possible before I have to do something major? Thanks!

re

put in syn. trans fluid, I put mobil 1 and it shifts ok, take out that gear oil, no good for that trans.

I had the same problem in my 85 ranger, in the mornings when it was cold sometimes it wouldn't go into 2nd. So i would just rev the crap out of 1st and bog 3rd. But it was only a few times then it never happened again.
