I have an 01 ranger 3.0 with manual trans and sometimes it won't start. I turn the key on with clutch pushed in and I get absolutly nothing not even the sound of a dead battery or solenoid clicking or any starter noise, all my lights light up and everything comes on, the battery is holding a charge so that's not the problem and its done this 3 times so far and its been after its sat for a few hours, if I wait a few mins and try it again it starts right up, help me please I hate bump starting this beast oh and no check engine light comes on

intermittant electrical problems suck.

i would first suspect the starter and the clutch safety switch.

its located right on the clutch pedal pushrod. its a round shotgun shell sized gizmo. its supposed to close when the pedal is pushed. you'll have to probe it with a DVOM and hope that the symptoms show up while your doing it.

ok whats a DVOM and how do i use it? and can i just bypass the stupid sensor to avoid this in the future

a Digital Volt Ohm Meter is a meter used for measuring voltage and resistance.

you could bypass the switch but shorting the two leads together, but this means your truck could accidentally start while in gear, in which case it will immediately take off. i reccomend against it because accidents happen. fix it right, a new switch isnt that expensive (if that is what the problem is).

theres really no other way to find out.

sorry to say, but wrenching on your own truck requires some basic tools.

i guess you could replace the switch in hopes that thats what the problem is. but that could turn out to be a waste of money if it isnt.

A question here, if I were to probe the safety switch on a 94 stick to check to see if it is bad, what am I looking/probing for, what connector wire colors? Am I checking to see if 12V is getting to the switch?

Thanks for the help.

the clutch safety switch is on the clutch pedal pushrod. unplug the connection and probe it with your DVOM on OHMs. the switch should close when the clutch is pushed in.

also one thing to check is if your truck is equipted with Securi-Lock which there is a chip in your key that has a code stored on it and in my case i dropped this key and the chip became dislodged and my truck wouldnt turn over either i had to pay 120 dollars to get a new key made so i could have a spare. idk when they started equipting these in rangers

not sure on the cost, shouldnt be more than $60 or so. replacement will take all of 1/2 hour.
